Glad to hear it's not true. I don't have a spare pair!

I have contacts that I wear occasionally so if I broke my glasses I'd wear those until I got new ones and I wouldn't drive in the meantime.

DRIVER : What seems to be the matter officer?

POLICE : Do you use your eyeballs to see?

    DRIVER : Of course officer.

POLICE : Do you have a spare pair in the car in case you break or lose them?

DRIVER : Errr, no officer, just the set I was born with.

POLICE : That'll be 3 points and a fine then sir!! And how about a spare leg to operate the brake and a spare hand to operate the steering wheel?

I suppose that if someone's vision was so impaired that they were no longer in proper control, and they admitted as such to the officer, they could be prosecuted for careless or dangerous driving -- but this isn't a 3-point+£60 offence!

You'd have to be as blind as a bat for this to apply though -- I'm -5 myopic and my eyesight is just about sufficient to drive without glasses. It's not something I'd do by choice though.....

Otherwise, as there is nothing you sign to say you're a spectacle wearer, there would be no way to enforce this law even if it were in place.

All this when they seem unable to do anything about drivers who clearly need glasses but refuse to believe so, or get tested.

  • Can't believe the police would say this! I wear my glasses 16 hours a day so won't forget them (wouldn't be able to see the car if I did lol) and wouldn't have the money to buy two pairs.

No, but if you were wearing glasses when you took your test you always have to wear them while you are driving. It's the law. ;)

You may also have a code '1' on your licence that confirms that you need them.

 indeed. You wouldn't expect the Police to tell lies, but they often do.

    There's no such offence.

What makes you think the officer was telling lies? They may have believed it was the case to have spare glasses and told the OP in good faith but to suggest they lied is OTT.
