6.4 people chasing every job

An MP just stated in PMs Questions that there are 6.4 people chasing every job.
That's not true at all as he is only taking the jobs advertised and dividing by the unemployed figure but they do not realise that it is not just the unemployed that are aplying for job but the employed too therefore 6.4 people is a lie!

I had heard a 55.4 rate mentioned by one from the North East of England, that i can fully believe, last time a potential employer mentioned the ratio to me they had 130 applicants for ONE job.Retired member - fed up with the general tone of the place.0

I take it that the 0.4 would only be looking for a part time job?

Remember though that if an employed person gets it then their job becomes free so really they shouldn't be counted towards the calculation.
Also remember statistics can be made to say anything! The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

I have been to interviews where they have had over 300 so any figure they use is only using the unemployment figure but there are many employed people applying for the same jobs hence making any figures the MP's use a lie.bluenoseam wrote: »I had heard a 55.4 rate mentioned by one from the North East of England, that i can fully believe, last time a potential employer mentioned the ratio to me they had 130 applicants for ONE job.0 -
For those of you who are interested in a more academic analysis, here is a pretty good one.

Also for every unemployed person going for a job there is on average 3 employed people going for the same job. Many people are under-employed so there is more people looking to move jobs.0 -

I bet a fairly high percentage of new jobs go to those already employed and the jobs they leave unless the company is doing well or the job essential they might not be replaced in the current climate.0 -
most jobs go to those in work I have said that already plus I have been told I have no hope since I am not working. Say there are 50 jobs I apply for and loads of other do too including people who ARE working. All 50 jobs are filled by people who are working therefore creating another 50 jobs that appear online a few weeks later so I apply for those too and they are filled by people working so it is a never ending circle untill they start looking seriously at unemployed people.I bet a fairly high percentage of new jobs go to those already employed and the jobs they leave unless the company is doing well or the job essential they might not be replaced in the current climate.0 -

So what would you suggest to encourage employers to hire out of work employees? The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

That is where you have taken a job that would not be your choice of career but is all you can get at the moment, so a tradesman working as a labourer, a graduate lawyer working as a waiter, a nurse working as a cleaner etc. So technically employed but not making the fullest use of their knowledge, skills and experience. Most people will be under-employed at some point in their lives, I was following a period of unemployment and many people are at the moment. So all these under-employed people are competing with unemployed for a job.
If there is a hierarchy it would look something like this.
1. Currently working or recently made redundant in a similar position at a similar level.
2. Currently working or recently made redundant in a position graded slightly lower and looking for career progression.
3. Currently working or recently redundant in an unrelated profession at a similar level but with the knowledge skills and experience to do the job.
4. Currently working or recently redundant at entry level in an unrelated position but with the knowledge skills and experience to do the job.
5. Unemployed but with the skills knowledge and experience to do the job.
6. Currently working or recently made redundant with most of the skills, knowledge and experience of doing the job.
7.Unemployed with most of the skills knowledge and experience of doing the job.
7. Currently working but no relevant skills knowledge or experience in the role
8. Unemployed with no relevant skills knowledge or experience of the role.
9. Long-term unemployed with some skills and experience
10. long term unemployed with no skills and experience.
However one person jumps to the top of the queue - the applicant who is refreshingly motivated, well researched, enthusiastic and can persaud you that your organisation cannot do without the skills, knowledge and experience, he or she has.0
