I travel with 2 children regularly on the train, so I buy one adult and one child ticket with a family railcard (both are under 5 so technically don't need a ticket) and this means I can book 2 paid for seats, which is enough space for me, 4yo and 2yo. We do try and travel on non busy trains, but it's not always possible. I got horrendous abuse from one woman because I wouldnt make my 4yo stand for 4 hours so she could sit down. I can't get both of them on my lap, and even when I pointed out that both seats were paid for and my 4yo would not stand nicely for 4 hours, she ranted on about how it shouldn't be allowed and I was teaching my children to be disrespectful.

If I'm on a busy train with an empty seat beside me I make eye contact, smile & pat the seat, but no-one ever wants to sit there...

If I get the bus to work it unfortunately is the one that has loads of kids going to school who irritatingly sit one accross a double seat at the back bit of the bus.
Usually there is room at the front but one morning the bus was pretty full so I was forced to sit next to one of the girls who ungraciously moved so I could sit down , she then sat twisted around so she could talk and shout accross me to her friends and the boys in the other seats accross the aisle.
I'm afraid that weeks of sleepless nights (hot flushes:cry:) and the prospect of a busy day at work gave the sullen little cow rather more than she bargained for :mad:
I suggested that she might like to continue her conversation by sitting next to her friend , she indicated that she did not want to do this so she was then told loudly enough for her friends to hear WELL JUST STOP SHOUTING ACCROSS ME THEN - IF YOU WANT TO TALK TO THEM SIT NEXT TO THEM:embarasse:embarasse
    Cue silence though.

Lol, it's probably the dribbling that puts them off.

I find the best thing to do is sit in First Class. You then get a single seat to yourself.

I had the "bag lady" this morning. She had her huge handbag open on the seat next to her and she was fiddling around in it for various make-up items. When I got on (at a busy station where the train gets really full) I went to the seat and said "excuse me"....she let out a big sigh and made a real fuss of putting her mascara wand back into the tube, then put that back into her bag and finally moved it off the seat. Then she proceeded to dig into my ribs with her elbows whilst she applied the rest of her slap. I got my revenge when my phone went off and it made her jump. I've got the Austin Powers theme tune ringtone and it plays REALLY loud! :D

Should have said " would you mind moving that bag on to the floor"

She proceeds to moving her bag. "no you say not that bag, you" ;)

Failing that they can always get two tickets one for them and one for the bag :D

    I get this too.

The trick is to remove your bag from the seat as the train starts to fill (if it does) rather than waiting until there are only a few seats available (thus selfishly attempting to cling onto your 'double-space' at the expense of the more considerate).

Oh I do. Was just making a point on the rare occasion I've had someone hovering in a rather stupid manner.

    Politeness always otherwise. :A
    Oh well...

Talk to their friends -no problem
Take up all the seats on the bus instead of sitting together and shouting across me just because I had to sit next to one of them
    Not on
