Or when people get on the quiet carriage, yet somehow think it doesn't apply to them!

The reason everybody is being quiet isn't to make it easier for you to shout into your mobile. You may also find the 'family carriage' more suitable for your 2-year olds than the quiet carriage.

Slightly different scenario but same selfish entitlement issues

On Saturday I was getting a train from Bromley South and there was a bit of a wait . There was one empty seat on the platform seats with a handbag on it and the women seated each side of the bag were in an animated conversation. The look of disgust when I politely asked to sit down so once settled I said "Oh if you're chatting would one of you like to swop seats with me so you don't need to talk across me" said with that very irritating bright smile of "helpfulness" ;) They declined and rolled their eyes at each other. I was smile that oblious smile that so annoys these passive agressive gameplayers :)

I also know of train services where it is announced that if people have bags on seats then they will be asked to pay a full single fare for them. I've never seen anyone be asked to though. Usually the conductor telling them to move it is enough.

I have another bugbear though - the people who sit diagonally and therefore leave the corner seat vacant. So at first glance you think all the seats are taken. Then if you have the gall to try to get to that seat they tut as they ignore your "excuse me" and force you to climb over their legs, bags and newspapers.

Oh, and when people crowd the doors and don't move down the carriage so that you have to fight to get on.

    Isn't commuting fun?

Worst I had was on a FGW train where the staff seemed to have organised some kind of mini-rave in their room just behind the quiet carriage - and every time someone went in or out, the music blasted out...just crazy.
  • i was on the train back from scotland and almost all the seat were reserved. when i got to my seat this woman was sitting in it and i asked her to move and she moved into my bf seat so we pointed that out to her and she moved and kicked me as she moved. throughout the journey she was asked to moved around 6-7 times the second from last time she was asked to move she started screaming about how people are picking on her because she was polish and started taking all the reserve seat tags off saying it her seat now. then she was asked to move again as the person with the reserved seat got on the train and she stormed through the carriage screaming about everyone being racist again and then started kicking all the bags in the luggage storage area. my bag must of got a right kicking as my deodorant can that was in the front of the bag was dented badly.

Train from Leeds to Brum yesterday, full of single passengers, and probably 3 of us had our bags on our laps. Every other double seat was a passenger accompanied by their bag next to them. We need a concerted plan whereby we ignore the polite ones and actively go for the bag-seaters and ask them to move their bags - even if there are double seats available. We're often just too polite in this country.

Be careful with that attitude. At least the Op was smiling. I'm always polite by default by I'm finding that when people are deliberatly trying, my patience can ran thin. Catch on a day with PMT playing at the complete idiot and you'll probably get an earful.

Not an attitude at all. Best to say what you want. I'm not a mind-reader. I've gone to move bags for grinning idiots before, only to find them still hovering.

You would definitely not want to catch me with Pmt. :A

Still I'm always polite, but would not put up with what that drunken lout did in said newspaper article.

Actually, I still find this very rude. IF the train is getting full and you are blocking a seat with handbag/luggage, the onus is on you to do the right thing. Also, it's not unusual for the seat hogger to have earphones plugged in.
Some passengers are too shy/polite to ask.

As I said before, I'm damn sure i ain't asking someone if i can sit down on a train seat just because their bag is on it.

I wasn't standing grinning, I smiled as I got there, and as I went to take the seat she gave the attitude. Since I have anger management issues, next time I'll throw her bag down the !!!!ing train.

Another bugbear of mine : The people who don't check if there is anyone trying to get off before they try to get on the train.

The amount of people who don't even let the doors open properly before they try to storm on the train and are surprised to find me standing there in their way is amazing. I can't get off due to them and there are usually people behind me so I can't step back either.

I think in the last two weeks I've had this 5 days out of 8. Not actually been knocked in to by someone trying to get on the train for a couple of weeks though so I guess I should count that as an 'improvement'!
