Maybe the people who sit in reserved seats are not used to the concept. I certainly have never seen reserved seats on any of the First Capital Connect trains I have got on.

That said they should move when it explained to them.

I know of one train operator in England that has electronic signs instead of the paper reservation markers. Every time I've travelled with that operator, their fancy electronic signs haven't been working :D

Cross Country Trains probably, they have electronic signs saying if the seats are reserved.
  • I recently caught a train from birmingham and had some bags of shopping and my work trolley, got onto a carriage which had a few people sitting on the other end but the carriage was about 95% empty. I sat down and put all my bags on the seat next to me, woman gets on stops by my seat and stares at me for around 30 seconds grinning, then tuts, sighs and says "excuse me" quite pointedly. "yes?" I asked and she sighs again and says "are you going to move your things so I can sit down?". I laughed and asked her what was preventing her from using one of the other 60 or so free seats. she walked off muttering under her breath and glared at me periodically during the journey.

I think its ok to put your things on spare seats next to you and move them if someone needs the seat, but its all in how the person asks for the seat really, or doesn't in the OP's case.

I totally agree. If I have shopping and the bus (I don't really use trains) is fairly empty I will put the bags on the seat next to me and move them as soon as it starts to get a bit busier.

I have had someone walk to the back of the bus and try & sit next to me when I had loads of bags even when there were loads of seats left though. She sat down on the side of the seat and asked me to move my bags. I just told her I couldn't because there wasn't enough space and so she ended up perched on the edge of the seat for the whole journey instead of in one of the perfectly comfortable spare seats. Of course I would have moved the bags if the bus was getting full.

I went to the bus stop yesterday & someone had lined their shopping bags up along the bench so that no-one could sit down or queue at the bus stop!!!

It was Virgin, I just didn't want to name them for some reason. But thanks, now I know of two operators that have them!

Don't get me started on people who don't seem to understand train travel!

Cross Country used to be operated by Virgin. They inherited the Virgin trains then spent umpteen million rebranding them.

When they were both operated by Virgin they used to hold connecting Cross Country trains if there was a delay on the West Coast line. Now, if the Virgin train is a few minutes late, the Cross Country train has gone...

I get the same seat every day, no handbags in the way for me.

And no one to complain when I pick my nose and fart, if I am late it's still there waiting for me :)

However if I took the train I think I too would be sarcy to someone trying to bag a seat for their bag ...

Train from Leeds to Brum yesterday, full of single passengers, and probably 3 of us had our bags on our laps. Every other double seat was a passenger accompanied by their bag next to them. We need a concerted plan whereby we ignore the polite ones and actively go for the bag-seaters and ask them to move their bags - even if there are double seats available. We're often just too polite in this country.

To be honest, I find it rather creepy when a stranger sits next to me when there are lots of "double seats" free to choose from  Surely nobody would prefer to sit right up close to a stranger if they could sit on their own? :o

Train "walkers" also freak me out, i.e. people who pace up and down the carriage for no apparent reason.
