I'm curious as to which train companies charge for seat reservations these days. As far as I was aware, there is no charge nowadays, you either get one automatically with your ticket (on reservable services - not all are), or you can request one, but I have never heard of being charged.

Would those of you who say you paid to reserve a seat please enlighten me? Thanks.
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

It annoys me when people take up reserved seats that aren't theirs! Last time we traveled there was a woman in my seat and her bag was taking up my boyfriends seat. we pointed it out to her and she sat and argued with us even though we showed her the tickets proving they were our seats. Even the guy that takes the tickets agreed with us and she still argued saying we were wrong.

Also I hate being on the bus with noisy teenagers shouting at each other. You're sitting right next to each to each other why do you need to shout!
that allso happen to my nephew an old posh guy was sittin in his seat and he told him to go away then a lady sat next to old guy talkin about death lucky escape for my nephew
  • My bug bare on trains is when every seat is full, but people refuse to move down the isles. Therefore I end up stuck in the middle near the doors surrounded by people who have something to hold. Whereas I cannot reach the holding handles above me so spend the journey doing a balancing act, trying not to fall into anyone or touching bums or worse trying to steady myself.

It's worse when you are standing in the aisle of the train holding onto a seat and then some idiot demands you move further in and you end up in that no handhold wasteland between the table seats!

Just offer to let them pass.

That happens to me occasionally on underground trains where, when approaching your station, you don't want to get stuck in the middle of the gangway between doors.

Over here in Ireland, you can reserve your seat on the train online with no extra charge (I presume the same applies in UK), and there are electronic signs over the seats indicating the name of the person who booked and the seat number. No chance of anyone removing the paper tickets! But maybe you have that system aswell.

I remember this system when I lived in Ireland, was a great way of reserving your seat.
I was travelling to Dublin from Cork with my daughter and we reserved our seats.
A lady was sitting in one of our seats and when I said it was our seat, she replied 'no it's not'!
I pointed to my name above her head and said 'yes it is, that's my name'!! :rotfl:
She moved with lots of huffing and puffing!!! :)

Loving this thread. I can just FEEEEL the frustration of seeing some gimp with a bag on the seat. It is just so selfish and unthoughtful. But then again, a lot of people think "they are worth it" and to hell with everyone else!

    .

we have that on the train I use but it doesn't give a name just reserved from train station 1 to train station 2

I know of one train operator in England that has electronic signs instead of the paper reservation markers. Every time I've travelled with that operator, their fancy electronic signs haven't been working :D

I'm not sure who is the more ignorant here. The other passenger for not reacting to somebody standing next to her with a stupid smile on her face and no indication of what she wants or the OP for just standing there with a stupid smile on her face and not giving a clue about what she wants. For all the other passenger knew the OP may just have wanted to stand there and grin at people.

OP, maybe opening your mouth and asking is the way forward regardless of the 'unwritten' rule of tube, train and bus that you should never speak to another passenger.

    50/50 I reckon

she probably didnt realise what you wanted as you didnt say anything to her.

I recently caught a train from birmingham and had some bags of shopping and my work trolley, got onto a carriage which had a few people sitting on the other end but the carriage was about 95% empty. I sat down and put all my bags on the seat next to me, woman gets on stops by my seat and stares at me for around 30 seconds grinning, then tuts, sighs and says "excuse me" quite pointedly. "yes?" I asked and she sighs again and says "are you going to move your things so I can sit down?". I laughed and asked her what was preventing her from using one of the other 60 or so free seats. she walked off muttering under her breath and glared at me periodically during the journey.

I think its ok to put your things on spare seats next to you and move them if someone needs the seat, but its all in how the person asks for the seat really, or doesn't in the OP's case.
