In the sixties/seventies it was possible for people to start a job in the morning and if they didn't like it to start a different job with a different employer in the afternoon.

'Fortunately' business-friendly governments have ever since been running a policy of mass unemployment to ensure employers are never again inconvenienced.

Really? And of course you can provide evidence that this is the government's policy and that businesses are not more regulated now than in the sixties and seventies. You really need to get this out there, perhaps you could right up your research and send it to some academic publications or even the newspapers, this government policy is scandalous, it is your public duty to start an awareness raising campaign and protest movement against it. looking forward to seeing you on Question Time when this story breaks.

There can be no excuse for the bad manners shown by the person who rearranged the interview and then failed to turn up.

The words Pot, kettle and black spring to mind when Interviewers come on here crying about candidates not turning up for interviews. It's a change to see the boot being put on the other foot and it smacks of hypocisy.

Many interviewers never even let the candidate know the outcome when they have taken the time to attend an interview, not even a courtesy rejection email. Some candidates have to take time off unpaid and even cancel holiday arrangements like I have done in the past to attend interviews.

At least you are still paid for having your time wasted the unemployed aren't

What a load of tosh, governments have made running a business so much harder in the past years!

Sorry but this is very true. The same goes for recruitment agencies when you could turn up at an agency at 11.00 am and starting in a role an hour later. No red tape, no registration process and no psychometric tests. The recruitment agencies today want candidates to jump through hoops just to even register with them

Neither does it for me to cancel an overseas vacation to Dublin a couple of years ago to attend an interview for a job I really wanted as the company would not be flexible on rearranging it. They were never even going to let me know that I was unsuccessful until I final pushed the issue.

As I said the words, pot, kettle and black spring to mind

I am also looking to recruit and have had the same problems. Interviewees not turning up, candidates not responding to telephone or email contact. Out of over 250 applications I have been unsuccessful to date.

I am clear in the job requirements and the salary range.

Am now in a position where I believe most applicants are just meeting the requirements of their continued unemployment benefits!

Based on the posts here, it would seem that there are a lot of complaints about unskilled workers applying for jobs that they do not have the skills for. So the question is, where are those skilled workers? We do have plenty in this country and many companies (e.g. BAE systems) have made thousands of skilled people redundant over the last few years. There should be a surplus of skilled workers.

I think geography is the issue here and tied into that is the housing market. People are locked into their homes and find themselves unable to move on to pastures new. When it comes to skilled jobs that are usually dstributed over a wide geographical area, jobseeking is not just about seeking a new job, it's also about trying to sell / buy a new home. We would be more economically mobile in this country, if we weren't so obsessed with home ownership.

    Something needs to change.

I know that I have applied for 100's of jobs - some via jobcentre and some from other places, out of them I have had one interview. I am awaiting a phone call about a job as part of a pre-interview. Most of the time I don't get a response.

I hate being on the dole - if my business hadn't failed due to the recession I would be working for myself now. It seems that when I do get a response to applications - I am overqualified no matter how much I dumb down my CV. It is frustrating and must admit don't like suggestions that jobseekers are only meeting requirements of continued unemployment benefits! Yes, some may be but not all of us so please don't tar me with the same brush!
