We don't. A man can call himself what he wants. Just like a woman.

Well, yes. If he's single, he can call himself Mr. If he's married, he can call himself, er, Mr. If he wants to be non-specific, he can call himself, oh, Mr. Plenty of choice. :rotfl:

Oh noes!!!! I've got the same name as my dad, and my granddad, and his dad. Not to mention my uncles and cousins.

So have I. I just didn't want the Mrs bit as that was my mum and she was the best Mrs mymaidenname so I am Ms. I wanted to keep my family name rather than have the same one as all my inlaws.

I'm still proud to be married but I don't see why that means changing name and part of my identity.

It's all a bit confusing. Look at Cheryl Cole, she's divorced but still uses the surname Cole. Why would you want a reminder of the 'love rat' Ashley!

My mum is divorced but is still called Mrs and has my Dad's surname. I'll ask her why, think it's because she did'nt want the hassle of changing loads of details

There is absolutely nothing at all to stop him making up some title of his own choosing if he wishes or not bother using one at all. A woman has the same freedom. Most people, however, are content to follow the norms of society by using Ms, Mr, Miss, Mrs or any other title they have earned or been given.

The vast majority don't get their knickers in a twist over whichever option others choose. Is it really that important as long as they are happy with it? Life is too short.

Ha ha! That is what Mrs G said when she read this thread. It's nothing to be ashamed of.

Then can we expect men to start proudly proclaiming their marital status on completely unrelated documents and forms?

I was proud to be a Miss when I was unmarried, and I'm now proud to be Mrs Imp's-initial Imp. For me, it shows everyone that I'm over the moon to be married to him.

Wasn't your husband equally over the moon to be married to you? Did he change his name to show everyone as well?

Does this really happen? I really couldn't give two hoots what a woman calls herself. I suspect most men have the same level of disinterest.

You should see the raised eyebrows when someone asks "Is it Miss or Mrs?" and you reply "Its Ms".

I think they do. My husband has just filled out a form for insurance online and it asked for his marital status. Men and women alike would be asked for their marital status on mortgage applications, bank applications etc.

the woman who may have to have her single status publicy announced for the whole of her life if she had to use Miss.

Are these women ashamed to be single women? Nothing wrong at all being single!
