Ms, Mrs or Miss?

I've never figured out how to pronounce Ms. Is it muzz, muss, mess?
I've seen a lot of people say they don't like the way Ms is pronounced or don't know how to say it. Is Missis really a lovely sound or is it just that we're used to hearing it and so don't really "hear" it?
I'm quite happy with Mizz - I don't think Miss or Missis are any nicer to the ear.0 -

but why should we have a choice/have to explain our choice every single time we complete a form? just make everyone Ms and be done with it. if people dont understand the gender inequality in having women's marital status known but not men's, then you really can't argue much more about it.0 -

It's particularly a problem because so many people seem to think that the only women who use Ms are rampant feminists or divorcees so they are getting judged by their choice.
Male = Mr, Female = Ms. What's difficult about that?
If a woman is really proud that she's single or married she can always tell people that, the same as a man can. Why does it have to be announced every time someone wants to write to her?0 -

Or she can just use Miss or Mrs. Then she doesn't have to say anything. People will know. Why does it have to be announced every time someone wants to write to her?
It doesn't, unless you want it to. If you don't like it call yourself Ms.0 -

Well, men also have to frequently tick a choice between maeeied, single etc...so are also explaining a choice, i see it as no different to dr, ms etc.....which we can choose or earn. And only partly tongue in cheek did i point out many women would like a title change for their dh's.
I have never been asked to explain miss, even after marriage when i have used it, nor been asked inappropraitely if married, divorced or widowed with using Mrs.
I don't see why holding a different opinion takes away our choice to discuss what title we choose to use! That is the most discriminating position of all in my opinion!0 -

Does this really happen? I really couldn't give two hoots what a woman calls herself. I suspect most men have the same level of disinterest.0 -

Exactly! Why should it be expected that everyone should know a woman's marital status when it's not expected of men?

I do. Mr for men; Ms for women.0 -

If it's a form where everyone is asked their marital status, that's different. Women are "expected" to proclaim their marital status by choosing Miss or Mrs whereas men aren't.

[COLOR="rgb(65, 105, 225)"]You won't have had to explain it because people will have assumed you are single.
I think as more women use Miss and Mrs almost at random and they lose their meaning, Ms will eventually take over as the default position.

I do. Mr for men; Ms for women.
But what you, and some others, are suggesting is that all women should be forced to use Ms possibly against their will
I suspect that Adolf Hitler and other despotic dictators would be proud of you.
Whatever happened to freedom of choice?0 -
