£9.99 plus £3.00 postage. I've bought from this seller. He's got 12 available, but the auction ends today, so be quick.

That wireless bloke has put his price up to £20 because I emailed him yesterday to ask if he was going to be putting anymore antenna up, as he didn't have any up for auction. He put one set up for me today for £9.00 plys £3.50 postage, but I'd already bought a set from the chap who I've linked to above. I then posted wireless man's auction on here for someone else to buy, as i felt bad that he'd put the auction up specifically for me and had taken the time to email me to bid before today. djrobmac bought the antennae instead. Wireless bloke doesn't know I'd already bought a set from someone else and probably thinks I'm still after some, so has now stuck up 3 more sets at a much higher price. Hope that makes sense? Anyway, buy from clone - his are cheaper ;)

I took out all the screws I could find but only one silver one to remove the hard drive, I couldn't see any other silver ones. Maybe I wasn't looking too hard!

Anyway, I was bored, so I decided to bite the bullet and install my wireless router tonight... it's a Linksys WRT54G, which is basically the same 4 port router that I already have (Linksys BEFRSR41), but with the addition of wireless. Installed it, sorted out my two desktop PCs (wired) with no trouble.

Then it was on to the laptop to set up for wireless. The laptop picked up the network straight away, although I did have a problem setting up WEP / WPA encryption. I'll have to read up on encryption over the weekend.

Although it says the network is unsecured, I have actually restricted access by giving the router my wireless network card's MAC address... so only my laptop can access the wireless network, and no-one else's machine can.

As you can see, the reception is excellent - I'm using the laptop in the room next door to where the router is, so I'm about 20 feet away through a wall, and the signal strength is at maximum. Not bad!

Regarding the antenna delivery - I ordered on Wednesday and it arrived this morning.

Superb, you have put my fears to rest and i now happily await the delivery of the card from ebuyer (on tuesday) and the antenna from ebay (soon, i hope).

This will be great because lets face it what would you rather have? An ugly PC card sticking out the side of the thing or a few mins with a screwdriver and have it all hidden from view & freeing up the PCMCIA slot too. Bring it on!

As far as the screws go and for anyone else who gets stuck. You remove the hard drive by unscrewing the one screw holding it in and gently easing it out, then under where it was are 4 silver screws from what i remember that need to be taken out. Once this and ALL the others screws are out the cover slides off easy.

Once again great thanks for taking the time to post your results and images on here, top banana

  • Woohooo! I was right. Left the laptop on overnight, with nothing running, but connected to the net. It didn't freeze once. That solves my freezing problem. When the connection drops (which it does sometimes, due to not having any antennae installed yet), it freezes bittorrent, which caused the system to freeze. Once I've sorted out the antennae, the laptop will be fine! No reboot crashes since taking the ram out.

I was not keen on a total wipe of system -

instead did the NIS uninstall from PB site , and loaded McAfee instead ( my preferred choice), SpyBot, Adaware & Ontrack cleanup

Its got rid of the PB toolbar (was almost geting used to it) although still kept the search icon for the same engine ( who's is it?)

Whilst surfing using Norton - plus I surfed for about 10 mins without any firewall / antivirus and picked up a pile of spyware!
    All seems clear now

On startup McAfee is reporting clickme.exe ( in APPS) as potentailly dangerous script- this appears to be part of the PB software - that Norton allowed

Does not appear to do anything if cancelled, so might just remove totally- any thoughts?
