My dad had been getting these really bad pains in his side so went to the doctor who sent him for a scan last week, he then got a phone call on Friday to say the wanted to see him back, so he's just been back this morning and there's a mass on his pancreas and they're now trying to rush him for a CT scan. My Dad isn't the greatest talker iykwim and I can't quite bring myself to call him, because he didn't want my Mum coming home from work, so can't imagine he'll really want to talk to me, don't mean that in a bad way though. Such a horrible feeling.

Have you ticked the always print with current settings?

Have you tried restarting the pc.

I'm assuming PC so have tried
Start menu - Control panel - Devices and printers
right click over your printer
printer preferences
click defaults
then select black and white

We had this problem last week when one of our pc's wouldn't accept changing it to black and white. I think we got it working by just restarting the pc though. My partner is pretty techie with PC's and it still happened. You're not being daft it's just that one of your settings is overiding what you asked it to do.
