Worcester today: A lovely fine cotton M&S top, looks new £2.00; 2 books, one Tim Weaver and one "Five Go to Brexit Island" (this is in good enough condition to be gifted) 50p each. Lots of B&H in just about every charity shop I went in (and I went in a few)! Would have done more but the Worcester Christmas Fayre (why always spelled with a "y")? was on and everywhere was very busy.Normal people worry me.0

:j Oh-ho-ho-ho! What better place to tell the world about my recent finds if not here?!
(But first, what's the problem with B&H???)
I've shared this with a co-worker but I reckon he can't appreciate the greatness of my bargain...(he doesn't look like he ever bought anything second-handed)
Since February I was longing for a toaster. A cream toaster that would suit my kitchen. I was eyeing up one in tesco... since then I moved and started looking for one in a BHF but even a used toaster was over £20 and they weren't even cream!
I almost gave up when I ended up in the archades in Rutherglen after Black Friday. There, somehow, I really don't know how I wandered in to a Shelter's CSAnd there...! There sit, on the shelf, my cream coloured lovely toaster with some nice pastel blue polka dots on its front that just happen to match my kitchen accessories so much! It was THE toaster! :j
For a whopping {drumroll please} £5!!!
And when I took it to the till to pay, I got a discount and paid only 3.75 :T
Also, this Christmas I have to buy a new fake-tree and all decorations (long story) and I bought most of the baubles and other tree decors from CSs.6mo EF: £ /£

Delighted with my CS buys last weekend . They'll see me through Christmas and beyond. Phase Eight black lace dress and stripey taffeta evening skirt. I paid £12 for the pair, probably cost 10 times that new. I've worn the skirt twice already and plan to wear the dress for at least 2 Christmas events. So I'm doing really well on cost per wear already.:D0

Help me out here. Yesterday I had a very strange conversation with my dad when I went to see him. We were chatting and then out of nowhere he said “Promise me one thing. Promise me you’ll never go near a charity shop, unless it’s to donate something”.
According to him, charity shops sell “other people’s spittle”, and they are there for people in need, not me. So I should not be buying from them. I’ve never thought of it like this before. Does he have a point?
I told him that although I heard him, there was no way on this planet I could comply with this request. What I didn’t tell him was that I’d nipped into a couple of local chazzers before I’d seen him and bought 3 booksValue-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

Hope is not a strategy...A child is for life, not just 18 years....Don't get me started on the NHS, because you won't win...I love chaz-ing!

Hi VfM4meplse
I've come across this sort of attitude several times. One friend will never buy a book from a charity shop cos she is worried that it will be covered in germs as someone may have licked their fingers when turning pages, (admittedly a pet hate of mine!). However she will happily borrow a book from the library!! Go figure?? Another friend would never buy from a hospice charity shop as she says she wouldn't want to wear a dead person's clothes. I'm just careful who I tell about my charity shop purchases now....if I think they are going to be sniffy about it then they don't need to know. I just, metaphorically, get on my high horse and think I'm doing my little bit for the good of the planet by saving stuff from landfill0 -

But would those 'people in need' pay £12 for maman"s fab Phase Eight bargains?
Doubtful.
So charity shops would have a load of great quality clothes but no buyers.
Who suffers?
The people in need helped by the various charities.
Off to the city today for charity shopping and a few different pubs.
Want black at least bum-length tops (to wear with aforementioned leggings/jeggings/treggings), short and long sleeved.
Will probably come home with a sleeveless tropical summer dress.0 -
My view is that the people in need are helped by those who spend in the chazzers, which need the stock donated by those who have thought rather than just binned stuff into landfill.
So you ARE helping by donating to raise funds, by shopping to raise funds and by helping to reduce landfill.2021 Decluttering Awards: ⭐⭐🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇 2022 Decluttering Awards: 🥇

I’ve never really understood why people won,t buy from charity shops. I have relatives like that. They will happily accept something free which we are disposing of and yet the thought of acquiring somebody else’s used possessions appalls them.
I have one particular acquaintance who has regularly admired items I’ve been wearing and the look on her face when I respond “oh thank you, it was only £3 from a charity shop”. has to be seen to be believed!
My husband was very dubious at first until I bought him some fabulous bargains in shirts and now he’s a total convert. However I don,t think generally there are so many bargains for mens’ clothes. Most of them I know seem to wear their stuff until it’s literally falling off their backs in tatters!0
