I went walking in South Essex this morning, armed with a tape measure and on the lookout for a bookcase. Chazzers were my first port of call, but I didn't find anything suitable. Somehow, I came away with another 16 books for ££4.50. It's a total addiction.

I could cut back if what I was selecting was trivial fiction - but most of my purchases are informational or acclaimed fiction. I now think I have a serious problem :o

It's not a problem if they give you enjoyment for a small outlay (I tell myself)!:D

The problem is now that I've run out of space. The dining room is choccer with bookcases. The living room doubles up as a nursery. My study can accommodate just one more bookcase, and I've got nearly 200 to find space for. The only room that has no books in it is the bathroom.

I suppose I could move back in with my parents and turn my whole house into one big fat library :D

Until you have at least two walls that are solid book covered bookcase, you aren't (quite) in a library.

That said, get the fire service in for advice? They have a score (full on hoarder scores 7 I think, or is it 9?) about flammables, access and so on - when they've left, you add another smoke alarm & three more freestanding bookcases...

Why let mere space dictate your delight in books & think what a Good Example to the young!

Hereford and Southport, but my favourite town for chazzers is Ormskirk. Formby is pretty good too. Sadly Liverpool doesn't seem to have hardly any, or not in the main central area anyway.

As regards labels, am I the only one who will see something gorgeous then put it back because it is Atmosphere? It's a matter of principle, on the grounds that it will probably fall to bits. Silly really.

Had a few good bits in Ormskirk when visiting DHs family up there xx

You can get bookcases that slide in front of other bookcases so you get nearly double the space.

A great design solution! But also expensive, so not very MSE. I'd rather get one with a bit more character from a chazzer, failing that Gumtree or a second hand store.

But the furniture chazzer on a S Essex industrial estate is where I'm heading to this morning....you know where you are :D

VfM - you could always get a Kindle :) There are thousands of books that are free. I do preferer an actual book but I'm happy for a freebee to read on the kndle.. Do hope you are cataloguing your stash ;)

You can always do both? Says she, with a carefully neutral expression, shoving the 2TB portable hard disk behind her whilst using a stack of books as a mugrest...

It makes "getting rid" of some physical books easier as you know you have them on your kindle, but then you run into the "but I like a paper book in my hands" issue.

I love my Kindle for the very reason that I can prop it up on a stand to read so don't have to hold it. Great on train journeys when I can get a table seat.

Just on my way back from Holyhead, had a little jaunt and a couple of hours to explore... found something that was new to me - a chazzer with "fill a bag with clothes for £1"! I could have gone mad, although most of the stuff was pretty tatty, but I did find two pretty tops and a pair of fleecy-lined Gelert walking trousers which seem fairly unworn. There was room in the bag for a few more things but my wardrobes are suffering from V4M's bookcase situation!

In my excitement I didn't even notice which charity is was supporting :o .
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

I always associate reading on the iPad / Kindle with work and CPD. Hard copy books are for pleasure.

Anyway, I didn't find quite what I was looking for in today's chazzer, but between us, my Mum and I picked up some handy small pieces for the kitchen, and the ladies running the place are absolutely lovely! Most of the floorspace is taken up by some really beautiful furniture, I'd recommend that anyone in the South Essex area does visit the hopeworx re-use centre.

I did source another bookcase in the end, and it's going up when I get home today.
