I grumble about the CS I shop from. How they could be doing things better. I wonder if I volunteer if I could understand where these CS's are coming from.

After my last couple of jobs and having two children looking after them for the last 11 years I have lost all my confidence and terrified to go back to work.

I was thinking of volunteering at my local hospice shop to get my confidence back. What I really want to do is become a CS manager which is a step too far as I have little retail experience. Or applying for assistant manager job part-time as a stepping stone.

What do you think? Have any of you CS bargain hunters volunteered. Do you recommend it? Or is it same s*it different workplace. I overheard the volunteers grumbling about the paid members in the team in one chazzer!

I volunteered for a small local charity and I must say I loved it.I do think it depends on which one you work in as to how you are treated. If you go with a larger charity its quite easy to work up the ladder so to speak.
A friend of mine started volunteering for Sue Ryder and has worked up and now is manager in one of their Superstore/Furniture places. I have noticed the movement of management going from one shop to another but not sure if that is though choice or being told too.

So I would say go for it.You will soon see if its for you.

Just to say that I have finally caved. Resigned not to finding a spiraliser in a chaz, I bought one online. With the discounted price and application of a gift code, it came to £6.20 out of my own pocket from an original price of £30.

Small price to pay if I do actually end up eating more veg (she says, rationalising her expenditure to herself :o).

We've used ours twice. So much for good intentions! :p I never was a fan of courgette in the first place, so wasn't overly keen on it even when it was spiralized. I might try butternut squash next though as I do like that.

£6.20 is a good price, probably wouldn't have been much if any cheaper in a charity shop. :)

I quite like courgettes, and make a mean tomato sauce so am sure that its something that I will use twice at least! Also I always chop up carrots into sticks, it might be worth looking out for extra long ones and spiralising. It might sound a bit weird, but I like them a bit dehydrated! Butternut squash sounds great, next time I'm at my mum's and she does some deep frying I'll make squash chips with them. And spuds too! Opportunities are endless :D

I normally use courgettes when I make a minestrone, if I spiral them I can use them instead of spaghetti, which I usually add at the end. Ditto I occasionally make frittata with spaghetti and courgette to give it some "bite", this time I'll leave the carbs out and use mega spirally courgettes.

There you go, used it 4 times mentally already and turning this into a completely different thread! Must stop this daydreaming and get some work done before I'm sacked. If I am I'll see you at the YS counter, but be ready for a fight :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

  • Some good ideas there, will have to try and get more inventive! I think I just love my carbs too much! I love minestrone soup, so might try it when I make that. :)

Now get some work done, don't want you getting the sack over a spiralizer! :rotfl: What's a YS counter btw? Excuse me, I'm probably being really dim!

Somebody at Barnado's has actually had a good idea. If they must sort by colour rather than by size, the Manager at one store has made a Plus size section. Saves having to look through the whole store and find nothing suitable. I asked if they are going to do that in all stores -No

I can't want until they go back to sorting by size though.

YS = Yellow Sticker as used on short coded food items for quick sale.

Towser - agree its a good idea to have a plus size rail as there don't seem to be as many donations in the larger sizes
I must admit I do like the CS that sort by colour AND size! There are a particular range of colours that I will never wear and it does save time not having to bypass those!

  • Today I bought a Dorothy Perkins jumper, Dorothy Perkins top and a Monsoon dress for the grand total of £9. My sister had a River Island dress for £4.95 that still had the label on for £60. Well impressed with today!
