Just popped in to say I agree with Greenbitterfly We have just had a new age concern shop open in a nearby town and its awful :o I dont like saying that as its a great cause but everything is so tatty in there and so expensive.
Trousers hung over a hanger so they are doubled up and really low to the ground. No sizes on the hangers so you have to kneel on the floor if you want to look at any (which I dont) :rotfl:

I know someone who donated loads of really good items when they first opened and she said she went in on opening day and nothing of hers was there :(

Very poorly laid out and no one ever speaks to you if you go in :D

I think this is one of their 'Flagship stores' So pretty poor really :(

  • In AgeUK today I got 4 items off the £1 rail, all in perfect condition and good names that it amazes me that they are being sold so cheaply.

A bright pink silk/cotton cropped blazer jacket from Next.
A grey/green blazer jacket also from Next.
A floaty navy boho style dress from Oasis.
A burgundy Topshop shirt with white heart print all over.

Tiny little two hedgehogs ornament - 50p.

From our local Hospice shop -

A Monsoon floaty boho style dress for £2.50.
A BNWT strappy camisole top by Roman in a B&W abstract floral print with splashes of lime green for £1.60.

My local Age UK shop smells, and is pretty tatty, as it's in a quite deprived area, I think it's low on Age UK's priority list. When I used to donate before, they would take the books from my hands and put them straight onto the shelves, and I only started donating there in the first place because they had such low stock levels.

I grumble about the CS I shop from. How they could be doing things better. I wonder if I volunteer if I could understand where these CS's are coming from.

After my last couple of jobs and having two children looking after them for the last 11 years I have lost all my confidence and terrified to go back to work.

I was thinking of volunteering at my local hospice shop to get my confidence back. What I really want to do is become a CS manager which is a step too far as I have little retail experience. Or applying for assistant manager job part-time as a stepping stone.

What do you think? Have any of you CS bargain hunters volunteered. Do you recommend it? Or is it same s*it different workplace. I overheard the volunteers grumbling about the paid members in the team in one chazzer!

    I would go for it.

If the managers & other staff in the shop you're considering volunteering in are nice, it would be good experience for you, especially as you say you have little retail experience.

Even if the experience doesn't lead to a paid job (and to be honest, I'm not sure volunteering will give you the experience a charity shop would want in a paid position), it should help your confidence.
