Sorry didn't mean to sound shirty, just get fed up with people knocking charity shops. Contrary to popular belief we do not get the premises free. In fact our landlord in known for charging high rents. Not sure what we pay though. I think there is maybe lower rates charged though.
We are just not getting the donations. The town is an east coast seaside town so many of our buyers are holiday makers who buy but not necessarily donate.
We also have two paid members of staff and an area manager etc. all of whom get paid although I don't think the rate is much above minimum wage. I am afraid it could not be run on volunteers alone. We have a job getting volunteers any way. Having said all that we have targets to meet every week which this year we have not reached apart from twice. I think that head office may decide to close the shop if things carry on like this. They have already closed one shop in a nearby town.
No one is going to keep a shop open that is not paying its way.

I went to our local cs yesterday and picked up this Ab Pump up for just £4. I was amazed at the price as it looks as good as new. These cost around £50 to buy, my daughter was very pleased with it as she is on a get fit mission. I might even have a go myself :D

Some charity shops are really pricey! Oxfam, the British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research UK are particularly bad. I find the best value ones are Clan (Aberdeen), Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland and the local smaller ones like the Sailors Society.

I bought an original watercolour painting (50cm x 80cm) of Aberdeen University by a local artist for £5 (similar prints in local art shops can cost £200+!!), a men's hollister tshirt for £4, brightly coloured plant pots for 50p, a bird print sheer blouse for £3.99, 90x90" heavy lined curtains for £10, a new men's monsoon scarf for £3, a George stripy vneck men's jumper for £3 and a painted martini glass for £3

Went on a short break to Aberdeen and got lots in their charity shops. The recession seemed to miss them as the shops are pretty full. The car boot is great as well.

Hi there, longtime lurker coming out :D

Today when I went to work I discovered an independent CS that's any absolute treasure trove - I'll go back regularly for all sorts! Today I found 2 shirts for DS and 2 t-shirts for DD, all Next, not much wear, for £2.70, then in a CS round the corner got 2 pairs knitting needles and a DG Hessayon veg planner for £2.40 - all in all the best fiver I've spent for ages! The "branded" CS round here are quite expensive, so I'm glad I've stumbled on these 2 - watch this space! :rotfl:

The first shop also seemed to have a lot of hand knitted/crocheted blankets, not huge but would do for the kids or over knees whilst watching TV in the winter.

    A xo

Though I'm on a buying ban, I did pop in one shop today as I saw exactly the pair of shoes (Crocs) I've been wanting for ages.
Turned out they were brand new & my size (and they fit)... but they were £20 so I had to put them back on the shelf. :(
A waist is a terrible thing to mind.
