What should I do - when is saving money not worth it?

I've had difficulties with my current ISP and Sky have offered me free unlimited broadband and phone line rental. So I cancelled my BT line and my ISP. As a result of cancelling, maybe, my ISP finally rectified the fault I have complained about since January.

Sky told me that broadband and line rental would be set up within 2 weeks - they are now saying it won't be set up until 19th April! In the meantime I've been told their routers aren't very good and their speeds aren't the best (though they did say they would continue working on any slow line until it reached a decent speed). They told me their service was award-winnng?

I would save about £15 a month taking up the freebies from Sky but I am wondering if in fact I should just stick with my current providers and pay for services that I was previously happy with. Any advice please? Thank you.

You could use the old router you have. I personally don't like the free Sky router but it's personal opinion. A friend of mine had Sky and the router needed to restarted frequently. The Sky helpdesk just said "Have you turned it off and on again?" "Yes" "Has that fixed it?" "Yes...but that's the problem" "Works now bye"... The connection is pretty much the same as your old one. It's the same copper line from your house to the exchange and the speed is similar no matter what provider you use (except Virgin and Infinity).

OK thank you, I have to return the router I have to my ISP but I also have a Netgear one I could use.

I just don't know if I am going to be getting bad service from someone all because I want to save a few quid!

Which Netgear one? Which ISP were you with?

You won't get bad service...it'll be satisfactory but it won't be outstanding. Depends on what service you are after. Whenever I call an ISP I just ask to be put through to the next level straight away. I can't stand 1st Level. Have you switched it off and on again? Have you plugged it in to your computer using the Ethernet cable? Have you plugged it in to the Master socket? Errr....these two things can't go together Master socket is in Lounge...Computer is in computer room but if I say that then they say fix that first and call back. Have you pressed the master reset button? Arggghhh it's none of that I just need you to reset the line so that it can sync at normal speed rather than 64kps.

I am currently with Plusnet and until recently I had no service issues with them. Theirs is a Thompson router which I need to return but when we thought the problem was the router a friend gave me a Netgear router. I don't really need outstanding service as I don't do gaming or anything and just download TV onto iplayer occasionally so satisfactory is better than nothing!

Isn't plusnet quite cheap anyway. I'd rather move the line rental and broadband to plusnet to save a few quid.

Sky internet is not free. It's a marketing gimmick. You will find very quickly that you will be exceeding the extremely low internet allowance (2GB) and being charged £7.50 a month.

It is also subject to Traffic Management which will slow certain services down. You don't do gaming so it shouldn't affect you and I imagine you don't download anything either.

No, I've been told I am getting them both free, as I have Sky TV.
