4.3 O's for me yesterday! Very surprising given the recent shoddy weather!

You guys keep quoting the %'s of generation compared to your target for the month. How do you calculate your targets?

Hey folks, long time no speak due to a persistent problem with my internet connection.

I've been given a 2kw electric radiator. I'm not sure how it works (oil filled?) - at the moment I don't have it on me and all I know is that it's 2kw.

Is this the sort of thing that could use one of those monitors that will then turn on the plug? An Optiplug? Will the radiator work at all if it's only getting 500w?

Recommended? How much am I looking at spending here for an optiplugh and associated bits? I already have SolarEdge system so I don't really need any monitoring, but there's no harm :)

EDIT - does the optiplug just turn on or off, or does it provide a variable amount of power to the device? What I ideally wnat is something that provides variable power so that the radiator is working fat 1/4 capacity when there is only 500w available, for example...
    3.924kWp (12X327Wp SunPower). SolarEdge SE3500 inverter.
Surrey/SE. 30 degree roof pitch, chimney shading from mid afternoon.

I don't get it. The radiator will consume 2kW, regardless. If there is 2kW to spare, it will switch it on. If there isn't, it won't. Have I misunderstood how these things work?

Sorry, I realise now you now covered that point by your question in italics, which I have just answered, unless I got it wrong.
2kWp Solar PV - 10*200W Kioto, SMA Sunny Boy 2000HF, SSE facing, some shading in winter, 37° pitch, installed Jun-2011, inverter replaced Sep-2017 AND Feb-2022.

Optiplugs usually sell for about £50.00 but this looks a good deal.

    £32.08 + VAT and del;)

Optiplug needs a Wattson Sensor to work, as that transmits how much spare power is available. If the heater only has a 2 Kw setting then you would have to calibrate the Optiplug to 2Kw, and it would work only when you have 2 Kw spare.

    2.48 O's today folks......coffee.gif

    Morning Jim.

Have a play on PVGIS, there's a walkthrough in the PV FAQ, section 5:

    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3872445

the results table will give you monthly averages, as well as an annual average. Obviously, don't get to hung up on it, good months are balanced by bad months etc etc, so just a bit of fun.

However, I do find it interesting when what at first appears to be a good (or bad) month, shows the opposite against monthly targets, like this month. It tends to reflect the difference that air temp, and wind (to flush out hot air) makes.

    Mart.
Mart. Cardiff. 8.72 kWp PV systems (2.12 SSW 4.6 ESE & 2.0 WNW). 20kWh battery storage. Two A2A units for cleaner heating. Two BEV's for cleaner driving.

For general PV advice please see the PV FAQ thread on the Green & Ethical Board.
