Hmm, according to my bills its actually

    GAS UNITS USED X 2.83 X CALORIFIC VALUE (39.5) X VOLUME CORRECTION (1.02264) ÷
    3.6

New Gov. Guide Line leave off: for two days a week...:beer:..Okay, don't know if you have a metric meter or not but.... Quote EoN Bill: "•56 units x 1.02264 (conversion factor) x 39.7 (calorific value) ÷ 3.6 (to get kilowatt hours) = 632 kWh• " Pick the God-damn bones out of that....:rotfl: The conversion factor of 2.83 seems wrong; but the calorific value for your area may well be 39.5.

Or should that have been 21.3 units, not 213?

Nope, 213 units. The bill has now been processed on line and it says:
    213 = 2,372kWh

    GAS UNITS USED X CALORIFIC VALUE (39.2) X VOLUME CORRECTION (1.02264) ÷ 3.6

In fairness I did post ~2,300 (not 2,343) but that was deliberate as it was just an estimate, and 2,343 might have appeared to be an exact number, which I didn't have. But comparing 2,343 est to 2,373 actual seems to show that my quick cheat of x11 works fine. TBH I thought everyone used x11, I'm sure I picked it up of a forum chat years ago.

Have you ever had your meter changed? One of my rental properties has an original cubic feet meter still(gas safe installer was gobsmacked as they're supposed to be changed at most every 20 years(apparently)), that may explain it.

Hiya T, my meter hasn't been changed since we moved in (18 years ago) but it is a metric meter measuring in m3. Presumably you have an imperial meter that measures in 100ft3.

Since 100ft3 is 2.83 times bigger than 1m3, that explains why your units have to be multiplied by an additional 2.83 to work out the kWh.

Effectively a unit on your dial is 2.83 times more gas than a unit on mine. IYSWIM.

    Edit, quick maths check:-

By the way, is that per quarter? mine was only 107 units for the quart and 333 units(about 10500kWh) for the year.

    333 x 11 x 2.83 = 10,366 ...... close enough!

    IMPORTANT

Just remembered, a few years ago it was revealed that a lot of households that had had imperial meters changed to metric meters hadn't had their bill calculations revised.

That meant that they were still being multiplied by 2.83, and thereby paying 3 times too much for their gas. So worth checking your bill and meter if you think it's way too high.

A metric meter is obvious as it has a big m3 on the front, and an imperial meter should display ft3 on the front somewhere, probably under the 'hundreds' dial.

Perhaps you need to check your conversion calculation on your recent Bill. If it does not involve a X 2.83; say nowt. However, the correct formula appears to be ft3 x 0.0283168466 = m3... http://www.checkyourmath.com/convert/volume/cubic_volume/feet_m.php
