Well to be honest, if you bought a TV or ps3 for 400odd quid, would you not expect more than 3 - 4 years use out of it?! I know for a fact i would!

After 25k miles you should not be having to replace things like exhaust manifolds and turbos! After 75k i dont think anyone would complain, but 25k is hardly any mileage at all.

And for something that gets occasional use, its even worse. If he had done 50k in a year or something then fine.

But 25k over 4 years - 6250 miles per year. And that would indicate to me an engineering fault or a design fault.

My starlet gt turbo, did 130,000 miles at 210bhp (up from 133bhp) and only cracked the manifold at 110000 miles...

I dont think it should be a FOC job but there may be a deal to be done if you approach it the right way.

Nope, i dont think it does, as it was just a comparison that a standard vauxhall cant do 25k miles without it happening, where a performance tuned toyota of standard (cast) exhaust manifold lasts 110k...

I realise you friend is a nun and she bought it from the local vicar (see, there's a bible on the back seat as proof) and the secondhand car is only used at the weekends to take orphans to the countryside.
However, the seller might think a secondhand hothatch, with a known weak spot, sold many months ago, may instead have been used in anger on a few occasions , not partcularly well driven or maintained and tell (the nun) sorry your friend, to jog on.

I have to say that has to be one of the most obnoxious replies here. There really is no need for it. I thought we were all adults here...

If you have no idea of what you are talking about dont comment. Wether its driven in anger once or on more than a few occasions is irrelevant, as the parts fitted to it should be fit for the purpose it is intended to be used for. (Nurburgring edition, does that give you any clues?!) And as its fully serviced with main dealers and obviously doesn't do that many miles, it should not have failed so quickly.

You dont build a hot hatch to drive it like a granny. So it should be adequately built to with stand the type of use it would be expected to have...

The manifold should last longer than 4 years/25k, thats a joke.I expect the manifold to last the life of the car if its kept standard.
If its out of warranty you may get some contribution from Vauxhall themselves.Try and keep the dealer onside to fight your corner with them.If they get nowhere, ring Vauxhall directly pointing out that an exhaust manifold isn't really a consumable(like an exhaust would be).

Trawl the Vauxhall forums, it may be a common issue that Vauxhall try and deny exists but when pushed pay out for it eg VAG injectors and loom on the 170 diesel engines, Mini power steering etc.

Wrong assumption. If a car is out of warranty, then dealer is not obliged to repair free of charge.

If he expects the same, then he better buy a Kia next time which comes with 7-yr warranty
