Help with Vauxhall dealer urgent!

Righty,

Ive just joined up on behalf of a friend as im pretty sure im right on this one.

The end of july last year he bought a second hand Vauxhall Astra VXR Nurburgring (the special edition) on an 08 plate with 25k miles for £13,500, From a VX dealer.

Now it has been fine until the last two weeks where it has lost power and been very sluggish etc.

It turns out the exhaust manifold has cracked and is causing these issues, the problem been the exhaust manifold and turbo unit are all one unit. And the parts alone for the unit are £380 and the labour etc. So obviously this is going to be a very costly exercise.

Now im saying that VX should either repair this for free, as if i paid 13.5k for a car less than a year ago I wouldnt expect to have to be shelling out for anything more than the "consumables".

Just looking at where he stands really?

Why should they do it for free? it was fine when he took the car and the problem has emanated after he has been driving it for two weeks...a crack caused by something he has done?? who knows but if the crack had existed two weeks ago so would the symptoms....

The onus would be on you to prove that the fault existed when the car was bought.

its out of warranty, but the consumer rights state the warranty isnt the amount of time youve owned it etc, its to dow ith the value of the sale etc, so a £400 part would reasonably be expected to last more than 3 years?

and he has owned the car since july last year. Im just saying a part like an exhaust manifold and a turbo should be lasting more than 3 - 4 years and 25k miles should it not? Esp when said part is nearly £400 and then you have labour on top of that?

And why would the dealer have to pay for this? They didn't make the car. The VX dealer is just a franchised business flogging those things.

Tell your friend to contact Vauxhall ASAP, maybe they can contribute to the repair cost.

I know it's out of warranty, but cracked exhaust manifolds are quite common on the Astra - there is a weak spot that cracks when you turn the red hot engine off, without letting it cool down.

Because he bought it from a main vx dealer?

And this is exactly what i am saying, that a part that expensive that is a known weak point, should last more than 25k miles and should be replaced FOC by VX?

And what is the difference between a main and minor VX dealer? A the end of the day they just buy and sell cars and have exactly same obligations. Frankly fixing 4yo cars free of charge is not their business model.

Yes, replaced by VX, and not by the dealer. If you want £ contribution towards the repair cost you need to speak to General Motors Vauxhall in Luton, and not your dealer.

Was this a Network Q purchase ?

If so then warranty details are here and specifically exclude exhaust system

TBH irrespective of whether it's a known problem I wouldn't be expecting a contribution unless you can show that all recommended procedures have been followed e.g. letting engine run at low revs before switching off after high speed run

bits break
lots of vauxhalls break their manifolds
i put one surplus to requirements on ebay last year, it was on 5 minutes and a bloke bought it
your mate needs to buy a brand new hyundai i10 if he wants a cover all warranty

Why do people think their car should be fixed for free for life just because they bought from a main dealer.

He has a performance car, that's got no warrenty, if he can't afford to run and maintain it, sell it.
