Freecycle - Beggars CAN be choosers!

In a recent bulletin the same person was offering wood from an old fence, and asking whether anyone had a rabbit hutch they no longer wanted. Surely all she needed was nails and a length of wire mesh?
Maybe the wood was treated in something that is unsuitable or poisonous to rabbits?
TBH i cant complain about my local freecycle group. Very rarely do we get the kind of posts you're referring to. And the thing you seem to see given away most often is books! Which is great for me as an avid reader but not so great for my bookcases as I tend to keep books (usually ones i buy myself) I really enjoy and just pass on the rest.
Plus if i get a bag of books on freecycle I then pass them on to my mum, aunt, cousin, friend, friends mum etc who in turn all pass them on to other people.
I have given away lots on freecycle. I did have one of the "new house" ones (although young couple with a child starting out on their own rather than single parent) and because I was having a clear out at the time, i thought why not. Even took the stuff down to them as it was just around the corner from my parents. Just stuff like bed covers, tea towels, cutlery, toaster, kettle, tv, microwave etc (I'd been redecorating so had bought new ones for myself). And, as a pleasant surprise, the girl had gotten me a bottle of white wine. While i'm not a wine drinker, i was still over the moon at the gestureYou keep using that word. Someone once offered a hot tub on our freecycle. It was free but you had to arrange your own crane to lift it over their bungalow (the only way to get it out of the garden apparently). I always wondered whether anyone took them up on that offer!0

We have given away a few items recently, over the last few weeks after having a tidy of the attic, and on many of the occasions we posted it is the same person who is asking for the item. Not like they were similar items either....a real random assortment of items.
I think this person has a car boot sale going on...and suffice to say they didnt get anything after the first item.0 -
A new low in freecycle wants?WANTED: Toilet seat and lid (Welling, Kent)
New toilet seat and lid required as current one broke today. Hope
someone can help. Not fussy about the colour. Toilet is champagne

I received a 2ft fish tank and gravel - very civil each way.
I passed on the 2ft tank when I got a 3ft.
I gave away loads of Jam Jars - the person even bought back my big bag-for-life bag!
When I upgraded my microwave and vacuum they were given away separately- all very civil transactions. (I even dropped off the vac out of kindness)
Good idea, probably would have gone to the tip otherwise! Makes me feel good.0 -
I got a lot of flak on the Ebay board last year for defending some of the people that were being whined about in the dedicated thread they have their for 'silly/greedy' freecycle requests.
What is the point of objecting to someone who is moving into a new place and who very likely doesn't have much money listing the stuff they need?
They may need a couple of dozen things and only have money for six. They may well be prepared to save for what they can't afford. But if you accept that people can list one or two items, why not the whole lot? It may help both parties if someone has got something needed but neither party will benefit if you can only list one item at random from your list and no one has it.
Similarly, someone was castigated for asking if anyone had a settee of a certain colour. Why? If you are prepared to wait for a settee that fits your d!cor, what is the point of asking for 'a settee' and then turning down those that are not suitable?
Some people seem to have a rather weird idea of the purpose Freecycle. It's there to match people who have things they don't want with people who need things, not for supplicants to humbly beg from the ladies bountiful who deign to offer things that they would otherwise throw away.
Of course, people asking for a TV and stating it must be LCD and at least 42" are taking the 'p'. :rotfl:
Totally and utterly agree with this! Couldn't have put it better if I tried.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
Hi all, I joined freecycle ages ago but havent used it, as others have already posted, the items people want can be really cheeky, i would find it uncomfortable to take something for nothing. I think it started out as a good idea but it sounds like its all getting a bit out of hand. i would just give away to friends or charity to be honest. I read the emails they send me and keep meaning to "unjoin" but its still interesting to read even though I sometimes get cross0

I would dearly love to "unjoin" or leave the group.
Only problem then is that there would be no one else doing all the donkey work.... lol0
