Everyone asks why the last person left and how long they had been there. I do. Wouldn't you think it odd if they had only been there 3 weeks and walked out? Not that they would probably tell you they had walked out but they have to be honest and say they had only been there a short time and maybe got another job or something else.

I have never asked that question, but I certainly will do in future. At the end of an interview when they say do you have any questions now I will have one. I tend to be a bit wary asking questions about the company in case I was expected to have researched it.

I ask you, you'll need to have a degree for shelf filling soon.

The sad thing is, I wouldn't be surprised if somewhere some "University" is actually offering a degree course in shelf filling ....

I wouldn't ask it. If they are forced to tell a lie they will take against you. It'll be the thing about you that they remember.

It's always a good question to ask and I have always done it at interviews. All of the interviewers have been very straight saying previous employee has been promoted or things didn't work out with the last jobholder etc. I can't understand why some don't think it's an appropriate question to ask because as far as i'm concerned it's one of the most important.

surely the interviewer wants you to be honest but they wont be themselves, shame that.

I agree - what if they said they have been promoted? You then know they promote from within.

What if they say - They have been here 5 years but were studying so have gone on to so and so. You know the person and company got on well or they would have been there so long

Of course if someone has been there 3 weeks and just left if may have been the person couldn't do the job.

I went to an interview at the end of the year and the bloke actaully told me why the person had already gone on maternity leave and he was doing her job. It was because they had taken someone on via an agency who did the weeks hand over and when the women left to have the baby the next Monday the temp called in and said they didn't think they could do the job so didn't come back.

This is a true reason and I replied that they hadn't even gave it a chance and I turned it round to say that I wasn't a quitter.

Well that was quick, I got a phone call this morning, didn't get the job. I was really shocked the guy phoned, I wasn't expecting to hear anything to be honest for a brief moment I got excited, I mean they don't usually phone to tell you that you didn't get the job, I knew it would be to good to be true to get a job so close to home for someone who doesn't drive, he explained someone with more experience got it. So back to the drawing board which is all but blank. Really annoyed to be fair, When he phoned yesterday I foolishly got my hopes up again, I really need to stop doing that, it only sets you up for disappointment.
Did he say why? What was the feedback?

He said the guy that got the job has been doing that exact roll for 20+ years where as I haven't, Another case of someone already working getting a job, I wonder how many vacancies actually go to people already working? The vast majority it seems, but I never asked how I did. He said he will keep me in mind for the future so I must of did ok.

Most go to people already working as I have told you. If they knew that they wanted someone with that experience and you never had it then they in my opinion wasted your time.

True but it was interview experience and I have plenty of time to waste.
