Thanks ladies,
It's reassuring to know that others have biiig mortgages - KK, I don't envy you at all! And Cheery, I think we were in danger of paying off the mortgage and then not wanting to get another one, so perhaps this is the best way!
Really hoping the holiday let will help with the running costs of a big old house. Otherwise, I'm going to have to brush up on my cooked breakfast skills and do B&B! (That's *not* the plan!)Mortgage free 16/06/2023! £132,500 cleared in 11 years, 3 months and 7 days

Oh my oh my goodness that’s so exciting!MFW 67 - Finally mortgage free! 💙😁3

Very, very exciting! And with a property that big, I'm sure you could do the holiday let on AirBNB or similar - cottagestolet and whatnot - like the one I went to last month on that farm
the work is only on changeover day, and you could hire somebody for the changing beds etc slog.
Brilliant!2023: the year I get to buy a car2 -
Oh we’re definitely letting the holiday let through Airbnb or similar (Airbnb has low fees and attracts the right crowd, so it’s most appealing). Just don’t really fancy proper B&Bing in the house - lots of cleaning, house not your own and cooking breakfasts every day. I don’t mind cleaning once or twice a week in the let though (and they’re leaving it furnished 😊).
How do you get any work done between calls from/to estate agents and mortgage advisors? I’ve yet to add solicitors into the mix! 😳Mortgage free 16/06/2023! £132,500 cleared in 11 years, 3 months and 7 days

The day we exchanged was ludicrous. I had seven hours of teaching, and as I was walking between classes I was on the phone to estate agents, solicitors etc - and also the registry office as they'd got a late notice cancellation which meant we booked our wedding that day too 😂 although of course it was a secret so we couldn't tell anyone 😂
Before I went into one class the solicitor confirmed the exchange and I had to tell the class 'I've just bought a house! And now you know before Mr Cheery! So you'll have to wait while I ring him!' 😂😂
I set them off on some miserable task reading about some kind of crime statistics, and stood at the lecture podium buying house insurance for the new house 🙄😂😂
So yeah, don't expect to do much work 😂6 -
Super exciting! We too went from almost mortgage free to back where we started. But it was soooo worth it. If you have the chance to buy your dream house and have the lifestyle you dream of you have to go for it. The chance may not come up again.
Good luck with it all

Morning all,
Thanks Cheery, your story did make me laughI got up extra early to finish some work that's due today, just so I could get it out of the way before the calls start!
Fortune, you're so right - following our dream is the key here. Although I'm still having wobbles about being further from family and lots of what ifs... but that kicks in when I'm tired, so I can see it for what it is. And as DH says, if we really did hate it, we could move back - it wouldn't be cheap or MSE, but ultimately it's an option if it really doesn't suit us. But I think it will - we're so excited about all the things we can do to the holiday lodge and grounds (less so the house because of its listed status). We just need to find the money for some of this stuff - bigger mortgage for DH to pay, extra costs of him commuting/staying over once a week and the higher heating and council tax costs mean that we need to minimise outgoings and maximise income from the lodge. And maybe we also need to recognise that it's a long term project and we won't be able to do it all at once!
I've just instructed a solicitor - the cheapest also had a personal recommendation and is local to us, so we went with her in the end. And I've just had a chat and they seemed to know what they're doing about multiple dwellings relief on SDLT, which is definitely something we want to take advantage of, so happy about that.
Meeting with mortgage advisor to put in our application later (still waiting on AIP because it's been referred due to my self-employed status, but he doesn't foresee any issues). Mortgage would be with Nationwide, which I'm really pleased about as they're nice and ethical and I bank with them anyway.
Just waiting to hear back from our agent to finalise which offer we're accepting....
Have an appointment to get sh***y cat bum tidied up at the vets later this morning (is that TMI?!). Another job ticked off the list! 🙄
MS things:
* clicks done
* had the vegetable curry from DH's Indian takeaway biriyani for dinner last night. Takeaway was from Monday (after the Open Day) and DH completely forgot to eat the curry, so we had that between us with some rice for dinner last night. The takeaway worked out at about £2.20 per portion in the end, so very reasonable! (2 mains, 2 lunches and another dinner - I cooked the plain rice at home, had free pitta with my lunch portion and we had a discount voucher from Uber too!)
Gratitudes:
* Everyone I've spoken to has been lovely
* We're getting more than I allowed myself to expect for our house
* I've instructed a solicitor, so as per Cheery's comments above, hopefully they'll start to discuss things amongst themselves for a few weeks now and I can get on with some work in peace!
Have a good day all!Mortgage free 16/06/2023! £132,500 cleared in 11 years, 3 months and 7 days

We've finally officially accepted an offer - hooray! Estate agents are a law unto themselves aren't they - I had to ring him to confirm because he was waiting until he'd told the unlucky bidder that it wasn't going to him. Couldn't he have just rung me to let me know it was all OK!?!Mortgage free 16/06/2023! £132,500 cleared in 11 years, 3 months and 7 days

Oh I am SO excited for you!!! 😊😊😊
We worried about whether we were doing the right thing too, but figured in our case it was now or never. We'd paid off the old mortgage, I'd got a new job, neither of us were too old (but with our larger than average age difference that was a consideration). We didn't want the upheaval of moving without going to somewhere completely different.
For us it was absolutely the right thing and I don't regret a thing 😁
Fingers crossed the process goes smoothly and you get Christmas in your lovely new home!5 -
Madvix, congratulations! I'm so happy for you!2023: the year I get to buy a car3
