How much petrol money to ask for when being the driver on a hen do weekend away

Please read this post before answering the poll as question won't make sense until you do (I couldn't ask the full question in the poll as it was too long!)

Hi,

I'm going to Blackpool in a few weeks for a hen do weekend. I'm going to be one of the people driving there from Rugby and so will be taking max 3 passengers (car only has 4 seats) and their luggage for 2 nights.

Everyone has said they will give petrol money to me and the other driver but not how much as that's up to the driver (i.e. me).

My question is what do you think I should ask for off each passenger? According to Google it's about 156 miles but I just put in Rugby to Blackpool, not a specific route as not sure who I am taking yet so don't know where in Rugby I'll be picking them up from. I imagine with picking up people and possibly driving to places in Blackpool (or getting lost on the way!) it will be more like 180-200 miles.

My car averages about 47mpg and that's with just me in the car on my own mostly.

Do I just ask for what it would cost me in petrol or add a little on for the extra miles it's putting on my car, wear & tear etc?

I don't want to ask for too little and end up out of pocket or ask too much and look stingey.

Thanks in advance for your replies!

Do you ask for cost of petrol only or add a little extra for wear & tear etc? 59 votes

  • My estimate is that it's going to cost £25 one way in petrol so £50 in total. That between 4 (including me as driver) is £12.50. Or between just the passengers is £16.66.

Does that sound correct? And also would you split the petrol to include you as the driver or just between your passengers?

I use www.fuelly.com to keep a track of my petrol consumption. I have a motorbike which averages about 50mpg, and it calculates that I use almost 15p worth of petrol every mile.

Therefore your 200 mile trip would cost about £30 in petrol.

Add on a bit extra for wear & tear, you could say, ask for £15 each? (£15 x 3people = £45)

I'd much rather pay someone £15 to give me a lift 100 miles away with luggage rather than possibly paying more to deal with the hassle of public transport!

£15 for each person seems fair.

    I was thinking about £15.

I've just been on lift share and it says:

"If driving alone, this journey will cost you:
    £90.57 and 99.1kg CO2

The suggested sharer contribution for this journey is £22.64 per person."

The above is with 3 passengers.

    With 2 passengers
"The suggested sharer contribution for this journey is £30.19 per person."

    With 1 passenger
"The suggested sharer contribution for this journey is £45.28 per person."

I guess it doesn't help that I don't know how many people I'm taking as they will probably want to know how much I'll be asking from them first!

Sorry just reread your post properly! It's 200 miles one way! So your 400 mile round trip would cost £60.

I would ask £25 from each person, so you get £75.

    £25 is still good value.

I voted they should pay extra, after all your making the effort of driving, going round picking your friends up, supplying the car, etc.
  • Yeah sorry I didn't make it clear in my post... would be Rugby to Blackpool then Blackpool to Rugby after being there 2 nights.

I vote petrol money and a little bit extra, that's what me and my friends usually do.

What kind of car do you have? Petrol or Diesel? I know you mentioned Petrol in your post but surprised to see a petrol car get that mpg. Maybe I'll be surprised.

If I was you I would ask for a little extra. To take into account:
    1) Fair Tear and Wear
    2) that you be restricted on your drink consumption the night before you return.

    Go with 40mpg - 400 miles round trip. That's 10 gallon.
    If Diesel then £1.45 ish * 45 litres ish. = £65 ish.
    If Petrol then £1.39 ish * 45 litres ish. = £62.50 ish.

    Around about £62-65.

They should pay for your inconvenience and supply of car.

£20 plus they buy a stick of rock each, or a glow stick or a kiss me quick hat or a donkey ride. Lol.

    Only kidding.

Have a great time but ensure you're not out of pocket.

When I have done this before with my friends I have filled the car up with petrol before we set off and then filled it up again when we get back and just split the cost between everyone. I would only ask for petrol money as next time someone else would drive and take their car.

Would agree with this. unless you need the money up front to pay for the petrol.
Would you be going in your car if there was no one else to take?
Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today!
Cos if you do it today and like it...You can do it again tomorrow.. :p
