Have been out all day and returned early evening only to find several missed calls from my son. He is on holiday in Spain on a parachuting course. Apparently he did his first jump today and has broken his ankle/foot - he is not sure exactly what as the doctors at the hospital didn't speak any English but he has been plastered from his toes up to his knee!:(

Anyway he has asked me to try and get him home so I have spent all evening trying to organise a flight, eventually got one for Thursday evening as he is not allowed to fly for 48 hours. Although he is 30, I feel so helpless at this end, he has recently ended a relationship and has gone to Spain on his own, is staying in an apartment with no way of getting out even for any food. The hospital haven't even given him any crutches, apparently they didn't have any!

I probably sound rather "dramatic" over just a broken bone but I just don't like to think of him there all on his own without any help.

Speaking from experience, I broke a bone in my foot (5th metatarsal) stepping off a kerb in Turkey 2 years ago and also had toe to knee cast, I can offer the following advice.

He'll need a doctor's letter stating that he is fit enough to fly otherwise the airline will not let him on the plane
The plaster cast should be cut and split all the way up the front from toe to knee in case there is an emergency and it needs to be removed in a hurry outside of a hospital environment (On the plane)
He should have an injection of Heparin (or similar anticoagulant) the day before flying (if possible) to remove the risk of DVT.

The hospital I attended in Turkey explained all this the day after I had the cast fitted, when I went back for a "check-up", and organised it for the penultimate day of my holiday.
It would be wise to inform the airline as well of the injury so they can make arrangements for things like a portered wheel chair to and from the skyway for the aircraft, and if like me, ensure he will be the first one on the aircraft and last one off, both for his comfort and that of the other passengers.

    Hope this helps

How awful being stuck abroad when your injured. I hope your son is OK and able to get home tomorrow.

No your not being dramatic, a son is a mothers baby no matter what age he is and you must be so worried. I knew someone who broke his leg on holiday years ago and he had to buy some crutches but I don't remember where from, maybe a pharmacist can help.

Take quoia's advice as your son will need to arrange for a wheelchair to be ready at the airport. A wheelchair assistant will take him through check in, through customs and help him on the plane. He will need to remind the air steward he needs wheelchair assistance when his plane lands and they will radio ahead so someone is waiting with a wheelchair to take him through to the arrivals lounge.

Are you going to be able to meet him at the airport.

I hope your son is alright, and manages to cope till he can come home. Tell him to keep his foot raised to help with the swelling. (((hugs))) to your son

    Hi all

Just spent some catching up, nice to see you've all been busy! Glad there's a few coupons kicking around few things need to get!

Hugs to those who need them, and congrats to some of you too! (saw someone had a weightloss, sorry it's not direct at the person!)

Dad still ill in hospital, he's much better but they're still unaware of what the cause was. Glad coupons starting to surface again so can help mum with cleaning products etc as dad obviously isn't working

I'm having a day to myself today. Been running around like a headless chicken lately, plus if I go out I'm likely to spend money!!!!

    Have a good day all
