They are so pretty!
Thanks. One of our customers said that her GD didn't really like eggs, but now that she can choose which colour egg she wants, she loves them!

Lol. Amongst our lot we've got marans, legbars, araucana and araucana x with sussex and pekin, so they give us the dark brown, blue and greeny blue eggs. We want to get a couple more legbars cos we do love the blue eggs, they're so pretty!0 -
I can confirm that ASDA SP 15's are back down to £1.25 (8.33p each). The shelf label still said £1.58, but they scanned at the lower price.
I might drop in again in a day or so and check the bargain shelf. With the price shown still being high, they might not sell as many, and my pickled egg jar is in need of refilling.
PS. I wish I could afford to get my eggs at my old local farm shop again. Once, I had to stop the car and rescue one of their hens, which was in the grass verge up the lane! Now, that's free range! The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -

Yes, very similar. I also have a few others, i am thinking about startung a breeding flock of sicilian buttercups this year. Mine is half wild, and the eggs are small, but perfect for the toddler who eats them. I breed hybrids for a hobby, and some of mine have been bred partly for egg colour. We have some wonderful almost opalescent eggs.....but haven't been able to recreat that ipn subsequant attempts. i love legbarrs, and friends of mine who commercially breed for domestic market tell me cream legbarrs are by far their most popular at the moment, which slightly disappoints me......i liked it when mine were slight ofdities!:o
I actually prefer the look of dark eggs, but i seem to have terrible luck with marans.....all mine have misadventure!0 -

It Doesnt hurt them. Mind you they dont like it when you try to take it off them!!!! Mum mentioned that Iceland have them on offer at the moment. She also mentioned farmfoods and Lidl.
I know the shell is soft when it's coming out, but still, they looked like they'd even hurt me! They looked more dinosaur than chicken.:rotfl:

Bloomin' typical. A friend's daughter is doing an A-level project for which OH volunteered to eat 4 eggs a day for 2 weeks. She called today to ask if he can start it on Monday - almost like they were waiting for the prices to go up before starting!
Need to work out the cheapest place to acquire 56 eggs over the weekend. Candidates are farm-shop, gate sale place near home, gate sale place on the way to work (sign says £3.50 per tray - how many eggs are in a tray?!), aldi, lidl, asda, sainsburys, etc. Maybe half a dozen from each and try not to go broke over the weekend ;-)
Egg diet starts today - we had 11 in the fridge last night to get him started. As if on cue, BBC runs the story this morning during the breakfast programme! Can't get to farm shop before weekend, gate sale place near home has taken their sign down and gate-sale place at work is now £4.50 per tray (thanks folks for telling me how many that is!).
In the interests of MSE reasearch, I'm thinking of doing a supermarket crawl on my way home tonight. Without too much detouring, I can pass Aldi, Morrisons, Lidl and Tesco. Might go and buy half a dozen in each and report back on costs. Asda and Sainsburys are a bit out-of-the-way so maybe later in the week. I think there's a farmfoods and an iceland in town but can't get there before weekend either!0 -

The situation comes from new EU regulations for more humane "enriched" cages, which came into force on 1 January 2012.
Free range eggs shouldn't be directly affected, except that demand might go up a bit.
Evidently, 99% of UK egg producers were already complaint, and the few remaining small ones should either be compliant or have been closed down by DEFRA by now.
So, with UK caged hen eggs nothing has suddenly changed overnight.
The problem is going to be with things made from eggs (biscuits & cakes, egg pasta & mayo'). The food manufacturers are now having severe supply shortages, as they use imported egg products (ie. white or yolk, in either liquid or powder), and can now no longer legally import them from the 13 EU countries still with non-compliant suppliers.
Evidently, so many Spanish egg producers, which were mainly relatively small, decided to slaughter their flocks, that Spain is now a net importer of eggs.
The good news (for now) is that the supermarkets are refusing to pass on price inceases. However, this could spell disaster for some smaller food manufacturers. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -

It will be food manufacturers, who make stuff from eggs, that will be seeing the supply shortages, as they use really cheap imported eggs, and can no longer import them from non-compliant suppliers.
The market will repond, more farms will increase the numbe of layers they keep this year, new ones will move into the market, but its a sliw business!0 -
I didn't realise just how expensive our eggs are here, in comparison to the UK, until this thread. We've been paying €2.20 for 7 eggs (free range), since I got here (3 years ago). I hadn't really thought to compare the price before now, but it seems it's already expensive here.
We have battery ones of course, which are cheaper, but I'd rather have the free range ones. They always taste better somehow! lolFebruary wins: Theatre tickets0 -
