    Reading these posts has made me realise how lucky I am to be able to get eggs from my neighbour down the street. £1 for 6 and the difference compared to shop ones is incredible. Can't beat them!
    While I appreciate getting such a bargain, I am toying with the idea of suggesting to her to put her prices up. I just feel guilty paying so little for amazing eggs, and I know that every penny would make a difference. What do any of you chicken owners think?

    I believe all caged eggs now, from late last year? have to be labelled as caged. They should have a number on them that tells you whether they are organic, free range, barn etc.

    Just having a quick read and I have to say I am very lucky that I have not bought any eggs for the last three years. I didn't know how much the eggs cost now! I have been keeping chickens, more of a curiosity, but this lastest batch of girls (Gertrude, Ethel and Maude) have been laying to my glee! At least a hot egg each morning when I let them out. Eggcellent!

    For what it's worth, you can replace eggs in cakes and other baked goods with a small amount of soy flour. Having said that, I don't use soy flour so I'm not sure how much it costs...but I think you'd save on it.

    I buy mine from a farm shop - organic and free range. Lovely and fresh with beautiful golden yokes. You can see the chickens running around.

    £1-50 for a dozen Class 2 eggs. I had to ask what Class 2 and Class 1 meant. Apparently Class 1 (2.50 a dozen) is what the supermarkets insist on because they are all the same size, no speckles. Class 2 sizing is a bit more random, a few speckles and the odd feather for good luck:rotfl:

    Last lot I bought from the supermarket were both speckly and feathery! They might have been class 2 eggs as I usually buy the 15 mixed size free range pack which I think was 2.88. If I can't buy at least free range we do without!
  • I have found that I can now buy a box of 6 free range eggs from Tesco for 89p. They are called farm pride and are labelled as mixed sizes.

    Found a box of 10 free range eggs in Tesco last night, reduced from £2.50 to £1.25 and still a good week left on date-wise (there were several boxes)......so nice boiled eggs, perhaps a quiche and one for the freezer and scrambled eggs back on my frugal menu! :)

    Eggs should have a code number stamped on them. UK eggs also have a Best Before date stamped on them.

    The egg on my desk as I write this is stamped ...

    3UK11510
    B/B24MAR

    O = Organic (IIRC, this also implies free range)
    1 = Free range
    2 = Barn
    3 = Cage

    UK = Country of origin

    11510 = Farm ID

    B/B24MAR = Best Before 24 March
    The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)
