OS Daily Thurs 8th March

Hi, this is the Daily Thread for Thursday 8th March 2012. This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.

When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” type start does just as well.

Morning all. Desperately need some help.......... OH was told yesterday that he will not have a job for a month from next Wednesday.:eek::eek::eek: Something about being employed by the MOD as an agency worker - they employ you for 11 months - any more and apparently you have rights!

Normally I wouldn't mind (!!!!!!!!!) and we would be able to have a lean month, but we'd get through it. Unfortunately as we're trying to sell the house and move, I've been running down the freezer and the winter stocks so we have not much left.

I'm getting my thrifty books out today to see what I can cook and I'll have a good rummage around and make a list of what we do have. I am very tempted to go and buy up our local Ald* but before I do that I'm going to take electricity and gas meter readings and pay online, and double check bank balances.

Guess it will be beans on toast tonight for tea then!!! Can't concentrate on much more sorry :o

    Morning Esm

I don't normally post on here but as I was up with the larks I decided to have a read.

I'm sorry to hear about your OH job, and hope something new comes up very soon.

It sounds like you are well organised (unlike me:o) and hope that things settle down again soon.

Good Morning all esmf sorry to hear your news it always comes at a bad time doesn't it.So first things first is a complete stocktake of available stuff and how long and how many meals can you squeeze out of them 31 days so thats at least 124 meals times whatever your No. of people to feed is.It sounds huge, but it is doable I'm sure. Breakfasts shouldn't be too bad toast cereals etc.Lunches can be pack-ups or something light but filling so its really 31 days dinners you have to focus on. I don't know what your freezer is like but I would think to top up maybe several 'rubber chickens will help take care of at least a third of the dinners.Several 800gms packs of mince can be utilised for another third. With sausages & slow cooked casseroles can be spread to a few more. Lots of pasta meals and a good few extended Jacket potato type ones will help, and if you have friends or relations nearby perhaps you could exchange a couple of meals for some help they may need gardening, a bit of house maintanence (you don't feel like your on the borrow if your doing something in exchange .Beans on toast has as much protein as steak so I'm told so maybe a tiny stock up on some beans, pulses etc may help.

In 1972 when we bought our first house for the huge sum of £6650.00 we moved in on Jan 8th and my OH had gone from being weekly paid to monthly at the beginning of that January so money was almost non-existant and January is a very loooong month with no money anyway. We had bought an electric cooker (on the strap as we were so broke ) there was no cooker in the property, and it was basically falling down, but it was our first foot on the housing ladder. The electric company delivered my cooker the day after we moved in,along with it came a huge Christmas Hamper as a gift .I thought brilliant, we have some food at least. It was full of tins of odd christmassy type bits and we more or less lived on it for that month. There was a huge tin of peaches that we ate our way through not just for puds but added to cereals at breakfast as well as once it was opened we had to eat it up.I had two tiny children and was miles from my friends and felt very sorry for myself We had been paying 4 guineas per week for rent at our flat and suddenly had to find £60.00 per month out of his take-home wage of £112 90.Family allowance was no where near as good as today and I can remember counting how many slices of bread there was to last the week.So it was pretty lean times, but its suprising what you can make out of almost nothing. It was also the time of the power strikes and electricity blackouts so it seemed as life couldn't get any worse. It was then I met my best friend June whom I still see to this day She lived about 6 houses away from me and without her cheerfulness and help I've no idea how I would have got through she shared stuff with me and even put my casseroles in her oven as she has a gas cooker.Friends and neighbours are very valuble I think, so let them give you a helping hand if you can.Hang on to your cash as long as you can and use everything up that you can think of from your food cupboards .When you move its easier anyway if your not carting food as well as furniture.Good luck and pm me if you get stuck
Well its Thursday today and I have just done my 'fiscal seven days without shopping' .Not missed it at all, probably be 8 days after today as I don't need anything at all at the moment Tomorrow I may go and buy some bread and a few fresh veg but that's about all. This month is whizzing by and it'll soon be Easter and the kids will be off of school.
I have been looking at Dorset on my computer and it looks like there are some nice spots to go to i phoned my brother-in -aw in Wyke Regis and we are going to meet up for a meal.Only 7 more weeks to go before my spring break and I am looking forward to it.

DGS Mikey isn't too happy as he likes to see his Granny everyday but I told him I will phone and speak to him and he's got to be a good boy and I might find him something nice form the seaside if he behaves.
Today DGS Ben gets his results from some of his GCSE's that he's done already so I have my fingers crossed for him He goes into 6th form in September and is hoping to take English History, Physics and Philosophy at 'A'level, he is a bright lad and has been offered a place in the sixth form at his grammar school already

DGS Danny is back from his weekend in Barcelona and said he had a great time and barca won 3-1 last saturday which pleased him no end.
Right well time to get a wriggle on
have a good day folks and try not to worry too much esmf

Esmf oh no :( there is a thread on here where one poster had £20 to buy food for a whole month, OK she had a little bit more of a stock cupboard but the thread might give you some ideas. It IS very long read but hope it makes you feel less panicked https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2116179

Morning all, dry and dull here but I think the sun is struggling to come through. esmf that is not good news, would it be worth seeing if he is entitled to some sort of benefits, Citizens Advice Bureau might be able to help.Have you got anything you could sell on e-bay etc: that could bring in some extra cash. Sending you hugs.
Thank-you all so much for the posivibes for Daisy cat, unfortunately it was not a good outcome, it was not her teeth after all but she had a very aggressive bone cancer in her jaw so I had to have her put to sleep. It was very hard ,driving while crying is not easy. She was a favourite of my Mum so I am picturing them strolling through the summerlands together as Daisy loved to go for walks with us.
Hope that your cat is OK Cariad and glad the house sale went through Monnagran I did miss you as your posts like JackieO's are always so interesting and cheerful.
Hugs to all hope you are able to eat a bit more today Lou Your doggy visitor sounds gorgeous LW and Bitsy am really loving Luna in that pink collar "go girl"
Hope everyone has a good day.:)

    Morning everyone

Love and hugs to those that are having a hard/sad time at the moment x

Clear bright and windy here this morning, looks like excellent line drying weather, 1st load now in basket to go out and 2nd now in WM. DH up and off to work at stupid early o'clock.

Dinner last night was lamb casserole, bulked it out with peppers, onions, mushrooms, carrots and served with dumplings, mash, spring cabbage, green beans, carrots, and broccolli - not entirely sure what we're having tonight - don't want to spend any money and have run out of a few things so will need to be a bit inventive! Will be heading to the gym shortly - but have quite a list of jobs to do over the next couple of days - all the usual housework, washing, drying and ironing etc. Really need to do some cooking/baking as didn't do any last week and tins are empty - menfolk are moaning "there's nothing to eat in this house"! Will be writing menu plan and shopping list at some point today - think I'll be shopping at MrA tomorrow as haven't been there for ages as have been busy and had on-line shops delivered.

Went to DS1's parents evening at college, tutor really pleased with him and he's making excellent progress - he's working hard and the group as a whole are a delight! Nice to hear some positive constructive comments - really good to hear.

Better go and get myself moving.

Hugs to those that want/need them, keep safe and well x

  • Morning all. Hugs to the those who need them, life is hard sometimes :( sunny day here in cumbria, but cold! Going to visit my nan today with DS on the bus, only a 20 min ride so not too bad, looking forward to seeing her, nana sylvia or as DS calls her, 'nana silver' :) then will be doing my shopping list/meal plan for next week. Just a short one though as tomorow me DS and my mum and sister are heading for holy island for the weekend :) very MSE, staying in a bunkhouse on a campsite cost just £14 each per night and £11 for DS. You get your own (heated) room and ensuite bathroom and just share a big kitchen and living room with everyone else. So tomorow in asda were all putting in a little bit of money to get breakfast stuff and stuff for packed lunches and we'll treat ourselves to tea out. Most probs fish and chips one night! Looking forward to walks on the coast and charity shop hunting :) xxx

    Good Morning All

Esmf - sorry to hear that, sure some more qualified than me will come along with some good advice, was only going to say what Miffy already said about benefits. Also poss have a look at The Fiscal Fast thread (((hugs))) to you.

Lovely sunny day here in Essex, have a little office work to be done today then could either do big office filing jobs or potter around the house. Think will have a look in the freezers and see if I can do some bulk cooking. Also some baking which I haven't done forever. OH is at home but will be sleeping this afternoon as working tonight. DD has no college today so will be sleeping this morning then up all afternoon :o

Need to pop out to the post office at some point but that is all the money I want to spend today bar anything I need for baking. Will also try and do next weeks menu plan as need to do an online shop in the very near future. Need to change the meals I am cooking at the moment as Mon - Wed I am running around picking people up when I need to be cooking so need to look at easy meals such as casserole & soups for those days.

Got an interview for the p.t job I applied for, however now have received the full explanation of the job I have more or less changed my mind - thought it was a customer service role but is more sales - I am not comfortable doing sales and its in the banking industry so think will decline and concentrate more on saving/making money from home - need to get back on the ebay wagon

Well I think thats it for me now, have a good day all.x
