I remember a neighbour of my mums who was a Doctor. He refused any of these chemicals in the house, saying hot water and soap are the best answer to cleanliness and hygiene. He also told me sterilising baby toys, spoons and bottles was a waste of time and energy and was actually harming children who should be having their immune systems primed in the first years by exposure to many germs.
His kids grew up to be healthy and fit with no problems. I have 3 kids and the only sterilising I did was steam sterilising for my first baby, once a week or so to ensure I hadn't missed anything whilst washing his stuff. For DD1 and DD2 I don't even own a steriliser, mind you i have to point out I have breastfed and only used a bottle with DS (first baby) when I went back to work and expressed milk/used some formula.

Do they still exist? Does anyone know if there is one in Kent ( pref Medway/Swale )0

Yes, there's one in Seaford High Street, East Sussex, although I think it goes under a different name. Too far away from you but have you tried Googling "locations of Scoop & Save"0

When I lived on the banks of the Tyne, moved south about ten years ago, we had a "Bucket Shop" as we called them. I did like that shop and really thought they would catch on, but sadly I have not seen or heard of one since moving south.
Maybe they were just slightly ahead of their time.0 -

I'm happy to save a few pence, but there is NO WAY I would ever shop in a scoop shop. You might say your local one is clean and it might be spotless but it doesn't stop some mucky b*gger picking his nose and then poking his hand into the flour to pick up the scoop!
do you know anyone who works on food production lines or in restaurants? more or less all of them will have a tale of disgusting things going on in them. my dad worked in a bakery...dough kicked about and put back in the machine. i worked in a pub and an asphixiated mouse fell onto a bed of rice just out the microwave..the landlady picked it up, threw it outside and proceeded to put the curry on top of the said rice. husband worked in a chicken factory once...not to mention how those chickens live when they are alive.....a scaby finger is the least of your worries. there's far too much genuine dirt and pollution in the modern world to worry about a kids scabby finger in the sweets (don't you ever offer a pack of crisps round?)Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0
