guess who had 5kg of brazil nuts all over the shop floor!

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: sorry beetroot but I had to laugh at this :D

What Pigpen said about the tests that were carried out reminded me of an article I read where they took a couple of bowls from a pub on a Sunday lunchtime, some had peanuts and other had roast potatoes in for the punters to snack on (highly salted, which also makes you thirsty, excellent way to get people to buy the beer!). They found traces of 12 different specimens of urine/faeces on the food that was left in the bowls cos people can't be bothered to wash their hands or wash them properly after visiting the loo. _pale_

Don't even get me started on the tests they carried out on a London Underground tube seat

    My opinion

Ok the stuff in some of these weigh your own places if they don't have strict rules may have added 'extras' etc but on the other hand do you know who and how many people have had their mitts in what is pre packed. I know a lot of people who work in factories producing anything from meat to biscuits who won't eat products that come from their factory due to the lack of H&S standards.

The 'Food Weighhouse' I have used before here is very strict with rules on what to touch and how, my kids are petrified of even opening the tubs as they know the manager is strict :rotfl:

I also find some of the stuff expensive but there is usually special offers on in the one I use, I mainly get washing powder from there as it's cheap when on offer. For people who are elderly or live alone it can be ideal as they can just buy what they need.
One day I might be more organised...........

I agree to a point, but everything the scoop shop sells is dry, so it going off isn't really a problem anyway - and when you can buy pasta/rice etc under ten pence in the supermarkets anyway it's not really a huge saving.

True that anything could be put in pre packed food but this would be a one off and you'd probably get vouchers. I doubt you'd get anything for a scoop shop find - well, maybe a refund. It's more that at least factories are regulated and fined if they aren't up to standard - you can't really regulate mucky hands!

Each to their own of course and I'm sure none of it will harm you but it's just the idea of it for me...I'm very squeamish!

I usually steer clear of sandwich shops, pizza joints, kabab bars etc, if there is male operative without gloves.
Also get queezy about take aways and even dining inside restaurants.
Sometimes I've just got to block it out, otherwise I wouldn't eat anything.:o

Have heard the same thing. But you can't know about everything and have to take some things on trust or you'd end up paranoid. I think you have to weigh up the risks and act accordingly. I won't buy from those salad bars in supermarkets because of the hygiene risk but being OS wouldn't anyway - how easy and quick is it to make up some rice or pasta salad?

Also, you know how money is always heavily contaminated with bacteria; I've noticed at various events during the summer the burger vans might look spotless and the assistants wear plastic gloves but they serve the food, take the money, serve more food.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned the food samples they have out on deli counters etc in supermarkets  ....wouldn't touch them with a barge pole - not only does everyone dip in, but usually it is stuff that is past its sell by.... or it was in the supermarket i worked in....;)

  • I know having people's germs on your food is pretty bad but I think if I think too much about it all.......where would it end? I was bad enough when we moved house recently. I had to scrub the kitchen completely and wasn't happy until we'd put 'our' germs things so I could rest easy again.

I cringe when my toddler drops food on the floor and picks it up and eats it. However, I notice the really grubby kids at school never seem to get ill/infections so they must have marvellous immune systems. And, trust me, some are so grubby and stinky I often have to keep the windows open even in the winter.
  • Sorry - this has made me smile ;)

While I do cringe about peanuts on the bar (used to run a pub - and I'm sure that a lot of our regulars were not after toilet handwashers!), I think that these days we are brainwashed into being terrified about germs in order to spend a fortune on cleaning products etc.

I have a real problem with this - goodness knows what long term damage will be caused by our exposure to all of these chemicals - more, I suspect than exposure to germs.

A few bugs are probably no bad thing for our immune systems.
  • I buy spices from ours - You can buy only a tiny amount - if you only need a little for a specific recipe. They keep the spices behind the counter so the assistants measure them out straight into the bags. I also buy large quantities of bicarb from there for cleaning very cheaply. Ours also does refills of ecover which I also buy.

I tend not to buy from the actual scoop tubs but if it's stuff I'm going to cook anyway I'm not too bothered as the cooking is going to kill off most germs. I wouldn't buy stuff to eat without cooking though,
