BEWARE - fake leather jacket scam. Reportage

There is a scam going on at the moment which unfortunately my husband got stung by yesterday.
He is not stupid by any means and is a company director but so good is this con artist that he got caught.
Coming out of car park in Coventry, an italian man approached him with a story about how he was on his way back to Italy after attending a fashion conference at the NEC ( this conference did happen and La moda did exhibit there ) .
He said he was a rep for la moda and he just had these 4 jackets left over at the end of the show. He was on his way to the airport and did not want to pay excess luggage to take them home but would my husband consider having them for the price of his hire car ( £260 ).
the jackets looked good ( or the 2 he looked closely at ) and the guy was very plausible with a seemingly soft sell. He also showed him his passport and pictures of wife and family.
He parted with the money and then rang me. As soon as i put reportage jackets into google it came up with scambusters website with similar stories from around the world. The jackets are PVC not leather and certainly not Armani. Please beware. If this post stops one of you falling for same then i have not wasted my time.
Everything you need is out there - you just need to ask..................:A

  • This is a well known scam, and im sorry anyone who falls for it...

well you might say they arent stupid....

but greed has certainly couded their common sense, coz you can bet they arent thinking "they would make lovely presents" more like "they would sell"

There's a reason these conmen are called 'confidence tricksters' - it's very easy to stand back and say you'd never fall for such a scam, but some of the conmen are incredibly skilled at building up your confidence in them, and it's easy to get suckered in

short message for those who said i was lying over the tv scam in tesco. are you going to now start abusing the op on this thread?

this goes to proove there are scams left right a centre and that some people are gullible.
There's someone in my head, but it's not me
  • This is a well known scam along with being offered a brand new video camera in a superstore car park by travellers-you will be approached and shown the top of the range camera and be offered it for a unbelievably low price along with some story about it being an unwanted item/off the back of a lorry/etc/etc and when they drive off and you open the box you will find a bag of flour inside instead of the camera!
They also sell on brand new looking TV's that have little or no innards-just bricks for weight! They have been known to explode when plugged in!

They rely on you feeling so stupid at being ripped off or so frightened that you may have bought suspect or dodgy goods that these rip offs are hardly ever reported!

    Be very careful out there,
    Elmer:cool:

Remember speaking to an Italian leather jacket seller in a Shell garage in the Midlands around 18 months ago.He actually waited for me to pay for my fuel before continuing to try to sell his 4 pieces.Never bought anything from him.
Familiar with the accent he sounded like he was from Naples.
  • With my job I can drive 40000 + miles per year which means I see a lot of motorway service stations. As I used to smoke (Ok I have only quit for 4 weeks now!) I would find a quiet part of a car park , light up and have a cup of coffee. I have been approched by people selling Watches , Speakers , TV's , Jackets ....... nearly all have the same story either I am heading back home and can't takes this with me or the Warehouse have made a mistake with our load!

The truth is if it looks to good a deal then it probably is! (Fools and money spring to mind)
  • It was on The Real Hustle a few months ago.
