second hand car problems!

  • I know that a second hand car is never going to be perfect but you don't expect it to break while your driving it away from the garage.

The garage have agreed to look at the car so hopefully they will fully fix the problems. I will keep you all posted

Sparkly, you might like to take a look at this website, www cleanmyengine.co.uk. Your vehicle has these issues with its turbo. This is another option,if it does not get sorted,or something to think about to prevent future problems.Take care Sean

I think the car has overboost problems and is going into limp mode.possibly due to vanes sticking in the turbo. normally requiring turbo replacement.

This is what the garage we took it to suggested was wrong with the car.

We should know by Friday afternoon maybe Saturday what the garage we bought it from are going to do.

I have this very problem with one of my cars here. Basically the vanes in the waste gate actuator clog up and stop moving, this means the car goes into limp home mode.

It can be cleaned and freed up which generally does the trick. Mine was totally seized though so it needed a refurbished lower turbo fitted. Cost £210 all in including diagnosis.

Not expecting that you'll have to pay that - its the garages problem.

You ARE totally within your rights at this stage to reject the car and get a full refund. You may not be if you accept a repair at this stage and there are further problems down the line. Worth just bearing in mind.

I've since checked the receipt and theres a bit that says discounts given in lieu of remedial work with customers agreement. Do you think the garage would use that as there way out?

I would flag that with consumer direct - i think thats a fairly big no no on the dealers part.

What hes basically saying is that unless you pay the full asking price then any discount is in lieu of any warranty.

This does NOT relieve him of his duties under the Sale of Goods Act.
  • They're not budging on the full refund but at least they're going to sort the problems out.

  • dropped the car back off at the garage this afternoon and they're going to look into the problems. We've been told that we "won't be left high and dry".

Keep a log of any conversations you have with the dealer, just in case, but it does sound positive that they plan to fix it.

Good luck, and keep us informed!
  • Had a call today to say the car is sorted. The garage had to take the turbo apart to clean it and they are saying its fixed the problem. Apparently they looked into the gear box noise and they can't find anything wrong. Not been to pick the car up yet so fingers crossed it'll be okay
