I hope you all don't mind me joining the fiscal fast; I have recently become a single mum and need to be even more financially aware. In the last few years I have gone from being in debt to the tune of £21'000 to debt free (thanks to MSE and all your wonderful tips and ideas) and now I am wanting to have reasonable amount of savings. However living on one small wage with two children at home isn't going to be easy.... but I reckon with a bit of Frugal Fasting I should start being able to put pounds into the savings account.
Day one begins tomorrow...

Welcome newbies the more the merrier I think
:)
I have just got to the end of my month as today is pension payout day so I have just done my accounts for the coming month. All is good and bills have been paid. The left over surplus from June has gone into the holiday fund as I have no need to buy anything else this month and I am really please that a huge chunk of £17.99 has been put away for my family holiday in August.its the biggest amount this year, made possible by lots of NSD and using stuff already in stock in the cupboards.
I shall draw my £60.00 out for July as usual, and tuck it away in my little brown food purse.:)
I too have several small jars that I put seperate cash into that comes under sundries . for July i.e.
Quiz nights: £8.00 (4 x Tuesday nights entertainment)
History club: £15.00 (3 x Friday afternoon's club)Then we break for the summer holidays until September
Window cleaner : £6.00 comes once a month
Gardener: £36.00 :he will come three times in July as there is more to do
so, £65.00 is put in various jars for essential expences and £60.00 in my food purse. That way I don't have to dip into my food budget to pay out things.I also top my car up with diesel every month and that comes seperately as well (usually about £60.00.)
Once all my diferent bits of cash are sorted I keep a running float of around £20.00 in my ordinary purse for odds and ends (my happy cash stash:))The rest goes to pay bills or into savings accounts. This way I only have to go to the bank once a month to draw what I need, and then I don't get tempted to over-spend
I prefer to use cash if I can, but I do buy my diesel with my cash back card which gets paid off every month (I get 1% of total bought in January of every year) useful for birthday bits or larger stuff)
I find by doing things this way I can see where the money goes and am less inclined to waste it. So although I will have July's food money in my little brown purse today, I won't actually use any unless I need to until next week. No shopping to buy between now and then, but by going to the bank today and getting all my cash in various pots and purses today I am well prepared for the coming month:):)

We managed a no spend day on Thursday and most of yesterday until OH went to the chip shop last night. That's a regular occurrence in our house though, Friday night treat, so was already budgeted for. ( I didn't count travel fares) OH is taking kids out today so will need some money but is slowly coming round to the idea of trying not to spend which I think is half the battle2016 Grocery Challenge January: £296.20/£300 February: £262.05/£3000

Indeed it is it helps no end when you have someone else on board.:):) I have NSD now until hopefully next week as I have enough to feed an army in my stores.I honestly don't know how is all accumulated;) but I am trying this coming month to use up what I have before buying anything else. After all it was bought for consumtion
Today I have HM leek and tattie soup for lunch with some crackers and cheese and an orange and dinner tonight will be a huge sald piled up with ham new potato's and all the trimmings
I'm just about to start some baking as I have lots of ingrediants in the cupboard so I am making a Victoria sponge for DGS and a sultana and cherry cake and maybe a carrot cake as well to fill up the cake tins.
If I have time I may also do a chocolate tray bake for the grandchildren as well as a treat for tomorrow.
Onwards and upwards chums every penny saved is better in your purse than in the supermarkets tills:):)

Popping back in again. I did my 'big shop' on Thursday so should have enough food for the week, probably just need a fresh loaf of bread at some point. Yesterday was a non spend day, today I am going to meet friends in town so I'll have a coffee with them. No other spending is planned.
I'm very pleased as I managed to sign up my daughter for quite a lot of cheap activities in the summer holidays via a scheme run by a local organisation. She's got at least 3 half days each week for just 6 € per week and then a 2 week swimming course, 20 sessions in total, 40€. She shouldn't get bored!!Trying to keep in budget.

ThanksOH knows we need to save as redundancy is a very real possibility at the moment but I just feel like I am nagging whenever I mention saving the pennies. As an example my lot had pizza tonight. I make the base and sauce and they add their favourite toppings. Normally, I do thick bases but tonight I did thin crust and that way I got two extra bases out of the dough. Honestly, the complaints from OH
and when I mention making the food go further it was almost enough to start WW3.
I don't want to come across as a moaning Minnie but we have so many arguments over money lately especially because I'm trying to save it rather than spend. This board has been so helpful though and there is some really good advice on the different threads2016 Grocery Challenge January: £296.20/£300 February: £262.05/£3000 -
Hello everyone
Well I'm on 14/16 nsd and I wont need anything for the next few days so hoping to rack a few more days up. I still have loads in but not a lot I fancy so I think I will have to come more inventive.
Some days I find this challenge really easy and sometimes I really miss looking around the shops even supermarkets!!!! But I feel if I go round the shops on these days I will end up buying something even food, which is why I suppose I have a cupboards full of food!!!
Hey ho that's me
