I took the advice from a section of Martins site that suggests I write to HMRC to reclaim tax as I wash my work uniform..

I received a form saying i will get about 20 quid... along with 5 other letters with re-calculations of my tax payments since 2006.

I now owe them £1500. So thanks Martin.

Before anyone comes on and says It`s my own fault then I should add that i`m not self employed.. I have worked non stop since 1985 and I have not been responsible for what tax is taken out of my wage packet.

Just saying listening to Martin should always be met with caution.

How do HMRC say the underpayment has arisen?

They didn`t. They just sent me 5 letters with how much they said I underpaid in each year.

I`ve been ringing them for a week and no answer.

They`ve reduced my tax code to 290 :(

If their calculations are indeed correct, you already did owe them £1500.

You've just been made aware of the fact.

The letters normally include the calculation. So perhaps post the figures and someone may be able to help.

No, never knew a thing about it. I only sent the letter off about the work uniform 2 weeks ago. Can`t be a coincedence.

I didn't say you knew about it, all I said is that it existed.
If you have a tax liability, you have a tax liability regardless of whether or not HMRC have noticed it and decided to take action...

So are you just going to accept it or are you intending posting the figures to see if they are correct and whether or not you can do something about it?

290T? Have you got a wee pension they just found out about?

I`ve just been through the forms and there is absolutely nothing on there to tell you about..
