I've never had a P800 myself (yet!) so I'm having to go on second had information picked up from this board, which means this could be wrong. But is it not the case that if you get several years reassessed at once then as long as the calculations for earlier years are correct it's only the figure on the most recent P800 that you have to worry about, because each year's underpayment carries forward to the next one (as Mike has pointed out in post #16). So if you've arrived at £1500 by adding up the tax underpaid figure on each P800 that's wrong, it's only the £409 that you owe, assuming that is the most recent year.

Which tax year was the figures you quoted from? Was it 09/10 or 10/11? Also what tax codes have you had in recent years?

As Mike has said, it's only the figures on the last letter (P800) that give the final underpayment.

If you're still not sure then post all of them and we'll tell you.

No need to be. Just answer the 1 - 3 at post 18. As I'm beginninng to think your code is low (the reduction will not collect an underpayment of £1500) because you still have car benefit? Useful to know that (question 1).

Then - from the info already posted (but which had no year on it) .... it's clear you have a mix of under and over payments. The P800s work from the earliest to the latest year. So it is the final figure on the final year (10-11?) which shows the overall position.

It's that final figure - and the Code of 15 or 16 to the far side of it - that Question 3 asks for?

I thought I should give an update as you`ve been so good as to show interest.

I managed to get in touch with the IR... (After 1 week of trying).. and the lady was quite helpful.

The p800`s i received (5 of them) had a different amount at the bottom. The last three years 08/09, 09/10, /10/11 showed between £490 & £510 underpaid. It turns out by reading the notes (the lady didn`t tell me this) that the amount is a `Running Total`.. therefore only the last one was what I actually owed.. about £500.

A lot better than the £1500 I assumed but still not worth claiming relief on washing my uniform.

Aparently the underpayment was due to the IR not knowing in 2008 that I had been using a rental car for work (supplied by the company).

Maybe I should apply for an ESC as they never acted on this information in 2008/09 :o

So, basically as Mike posted on Saturday in post 16 and absolutely nothing to do with incorrect advice given by Martin!

Honestly, I still don't think this is relevant.
You owed the tax regardless of whether or not you asked them for the uniform credit.

Yes, you might have gotten away with it (i.e. they may not have noticed before the time period was up) if you'd never claimed the allowance.

But that doesn't mean that claiming the allowance was a bad idea.

They could just as well have done an audit next year without you doing anything.

It is silly to try and blame Martin for something completely unrelated.

Always a good idea. In particular as they're an easy read. Hence my repeated requests for you to tell what the number of the 'Note' was against the final figure on the final year? Now clear it's a '15' ..... so you just go to that part of the P800 Notes that you have!

How could they 'act on' the information if they didn't know about it? They won't consider ESC A19 - as you asked them to assess the year in question. Nor should you (an earlier post from me) ask them to put 07/08 and earlier to one side - as it's likely they are overpayment years and therefore reducing the overall liability.

Always a sound idea to ruthlessly check your Code number every year. Particularly where a P11D is involved.

I never said Martin gave incorrect advice at all.. I said "Be careful before taking it".. as claiming 50quid for cleaning my own uniform has cost me £500 and a whole lot of hassle. ok?

    .

They must have been told about it, otherwise how did they get the information.
