did he do nothing from day 1? it could be the case that he has given up hope. lets face it he doesnt really have much chance if any of getting a job.
Decided to drug deal instead, then ram raiding shops, then a brief period in prison. :rotfl:

Sorry but i think sometimes it depends on the person actually willing to go one step further to work.

My fiance worked in Norway for 4 months, it was that or nothing so he left me and my daughter to earn some money and keep from having big gaps on his CV. He came back with a very good wage, experience of working abroad and quite rightly he was proud to be doing something about his situation rather than moaning about it.

It's impossible to 'live' on the single rate JSA for any length of time ~ you just scrape by and live on hope.

I've been on JSA since November 2011. I'm a single 50 year old woman with no dependent children so I 'live' on £67.50 a week.

Prior to November 11, I had worked constantly for 30 years of my life. Was a high achiever at my previous 10 year Employer, have experience, a good work ethic and am qualified to the hilt in my field ~ I'm/I was a Senior Administrator.

I apply for every job ad I find, not just senior positions ~ I spend everyday all day looking for work and filling out applications, so I don't sit on my backside waiting for it to come to me. I've had two interviews but haven't got the elusive job at the end of them: One I was 'Over Experienced' for the position and they thought I would get bored quickly!! and the other I didn't get because I don't drive...'well I could get a taxi/bus to the other office on the 4 times a year you'd want me to go there at my expense!'

I've placed work wanted Ads, I send my CV out to every Agency and Business in the area. But I fear I am on the scrapheap and destined for long term unemployment.

I'm intelligent, personable, a dam good worker ~ you won't find me 'texting and emailing' friends all day long, like some of my other younger colleagues in past employment. I've had my CV checked over and it got a thumbs up ~ I adapt it for differing positions I apply for. I am doing everything I can to try to get back to work.......

In the meantime after paying for my regular bills ~ Electric, Gas, water, telephone/broadband, Insurance, TV Licence, Buildings Insurance etc. I'm left with £20 a week for food and 'living'. Since becoming unemployed I have changed my providers/insurance companies in a bid to lesson my outgoings so I've done everything I can to lesson them.

I am dreading the heel dropping off my 'interview' shoes, I long for a trip to the hairdressers (but I may not eat for a week if I do). I walk past the luxury items like shower gel and conditioner in supermarkets... yeah, they are luxuries when you have £20 to spend a week.

I can not see how I will sustain a life if I don't get work soon, and I want to work, not just because of the finance, but because I'm bored silly not working!..... I love working!

I know 3 people who have been on JSA for at least 4 years. All of them late 20's in age.
The one who has been on it the longest is way too lazy to ever get a job of any sort in my opinion. He spends all day playing world of warcraft type games online on his PC. He loves it! lol. If anyone asks him how his job search is going he always has an excuse and comes across as if he has the best intentions of securing work, but after nearly 5 years of hearing the same stuff (''was gonna look for work but had a late night of gaming so was too tired to look'' or ''was gonna search for a job, but went to the gym which really took it out of me so I felt to drained too look for work'' etc etc) i'm not so sure, lol.
