Or is it more likely the Claims management Companies advice is pure speculation? What course of action would you recommend?

Claims management companies are really helpful (at taking your money off you) they will tell you that you have PPI on something as the likelihood is that at least one of your accounts will. They have no more knowledge of your accounts than you. IN fact they will know less, they are fishing for business. That being said it doesn't mean they are wrong.
If you are currently paying for PPI on a credit card it will show up as a separate amount on your statement to the interest. For me the amount was usually 79p for every £100 or something like that. Someone on here will tell you what it is called on your statement.
You may also have paid for PPI on a credit card in the past but cancelled it. The best thing to do is call your bank first and just ask them straight out. Banks at the moment are being very very helpful.
If you get no joy from that there are other routes to take. I have no idea how the mortgage will work but again maybe a call to them to ask.

When I called HSBC they were hugely helpful and after a five minute call I had 3 account numbers all that had PPI (2 on loans now paid off and one credit card) they even gave me the PPI numbers too.

Let us know how you get on.

PS I am no expert but from what I have done and read this seems like the most obvious start.

It is becoming apparent that different companies are dealing with customer complaints in different ways. EG some banks are simply investigating from a phone call. Would it be a good idea to set up a discussion thread that points people in the best direction for each major bank. Eg call first, just fill out the form etc? It might make the process a little easier for those who are not as confident in claiming.

What do you think? This is where I find out there is one already hahahahah

However on these respective organisations' latest statements I cannot see any evidence of PPI, which would have been applied without my knowledge / approval. Is it possible PPI was applied to my interest only mortgage (endowment policy with Standard Life) & Credit Cards in the past without my knowledge? Or is it more likely the Claims management Companies advice is pure speculation? What course of action would you recommend?
As jdwmfc said, best to contact the respective lenders and ask them directly.

The most efficient method of making a PPI complaint to ANY LENDER is to simply follow the MSE advice articles.
Complainants ringing the Banks which allow this have often found that their reasons for complaint are altered by the person taking the call (not deliberately) or that the Bank takes the initial call and then sends them the Ombudsman Questionnaire to fill in anyhow.

So no need for yet another "sticky" thread, everyone should just follow the simple steps at the links:

they did not take into account the charges that were occured because the PPI made me go over my credit limit.
These charges are a totally separate issue, I'm afraid.

How did the PPI "make" you go over your credit limit?

It's your own money management that did this!

Regardless, the charges are not reclaimable as part of a PPI complaint. Full redress is a refund of all your PPI plus 8% simple interest.
As you seem to have been awarded full redress, I'd accept if I were you as you won't get more.

    Point taken and totally agree.

Just these claims companies are kind of annoying, I have been telling everyone I know to claim themselves. The government should bring in emergency legislation to ensure that the consumer is not being ripped off.

  • Hello,

Hoping you guys will be able to help. Long story so bear with me (and sorry if it has been discussed before!).

My husband had a CC with the PostOffice in 2008. We closed the card just before we moved house. About two years after we had moved we decided to look at our mortgage options; we applied for a new mortgage product to have it refused due to my husbands 'bad credit'.

I know, I know, should have checked before we applied for a new mortgage (lesson well and truly learned)!

Anyway, it turned out that the PostOffice had apparently not received our letter (despite the fact we had phoned to check) and therefore not closed the account and there was (unbeknown to us) a card payment protection policy on the account. Something that we wouldn't have needed as we had card protection withour paid bank account. They apologised, refunded the charges and said we could apply to remove the bad credit - it took just over three months to remove thebad credit, and we did all the leg work, circumstances changed, new mortgage deal not possible. :(

With all the talk about PPI we decided to call the PostOffice this morning to see if we could get a refund on what we had paid for this credit card protection plan. The woman we spoke to said that we aren't entitled to a refund as we had a card protection plan, not payment protection insurance.

Having read Martin's article I thought any 'protection' plan or insurance fell under the same bracket if it was mis-sold. I wanted to check my facts though before going back to them. Any advice?

    Thank you!

Don't forget PPI mis-selling is not a legal issue, it's just a contravention of the FSA recommendations.
It's not illegal to sell (or have) PPI!

I do agree regulation of the CMCs should be introduced, but it's rather late in the day...
  • It's actually damn near impossible to speak to HSBC's Regulated Sales Complaint Team even if you are still a customer. Even if you did pass security, they'd only tell you that your concerns were being investigated.
If you know for sure they have received your complaint (had an acknowledgement letter etc) then better to just allow them the time it takes.
You have the right to go to the Ombudsman now that eight weeks have passed, but I'd give HSBC a bit more time before exploring this option.

You're advising he sends a SAR letter (which takes 40 days) in order to chase up a decision letter?
I think that's a frankly bizarre suggestion, especially as it would cost £10!

I had missed the fact that it's to chase a claim (that's what I get for skim reading this morning!)

But no reason the OP can't ask for the security to be reset. Won't cost anything.
  • Hello
I have never posted anything on MSE before - I dont know if im even doing this in the right place (if im not can anyone direct me to right place)
I would like to ask for help or advice from anyone on how to go about claiming PPI on the following. I am currently following Martins advice and template letters on reclaiming charges from previous credit card accounts I had (approx 6 different accounts MBNA x2, Ulster Bank, Tesco, Northern and a BMI). I am also starting the process of asking any of these regarding PPI. However, I also know I previously had credit cards with EGG and GE Capital Bank but I cannot find any old statements or acount numbers so as to write them with.
Has anyone ever been in the same situation with either of these 2 banks and can anyone advise me of how I can reclaim any possible charges/PPI with them?
    Would appreciate any help
    Many Thanks
