Gosh. So we have to submit our excuses for shopping at Tesco. Now, there is arrogance for you!

The same will happen to Tesco one day. It's just a question of when.

Such tedious nonsense. If you don't like the quality, price, clubcard or anything else then, of course exercise your choice to shop where you think best but do we have to read this drivel and will it make us change our minds? I think not.

I shop at Tesco because, well, in relative terms since supermarket shopping is hell on earth - I like going there in preference to the local Asda (armpit of Satan) or Sainsburys (faff to get to and the carpark was designed by a non-driving blind wombat). Clubcard points are a nice bonus when the vouchers come through - but not some slavish ball and chain dragging me back to the store again and again - it's just the most convenient, least awful option around here... if anything, the ball and chain dragging people back to regular stores is usually more that they know the layout of their local and can get in and out faster... no grand conspiracy there.

In my corner of Norfolk we have an excellent Morrisons (although the one 20 mls away isnt a patch on it), an OK Sainsburys (apart from an appallingly designed car park) and a Tesco which for some reason I just dont like. It feels gloomy and slightly oppressive inside. I also harbour a suspicion that their prices are nowhere no as low as they would have me believe. But my real reservation is that, within Norwich, a quick google indicates 12 tesco express stores. Perhaps I'm irrational but that level just leaves me feeling uneasy - Tescos seem to be aiming for a point where choice is increasingly restricted as they "swamp" the small retail centres. Discuss!

I hear this claim a lot.

Tesco have somewhere in the region of 1500 Express stores (and a further 500ish OneStops if you want to include them)

Co-Op have about 3,500 stores operating in the same sector

Fair point! But (and please correct me if I'm wrong) they had none 10 years so its the pace of their expansion that concerns me. How many more will there be in 10 years time?

And that, for me, is the difference between Tescos and Co-op (and indeed any of the other supermarkets).

I think the format has been around for a while, though certainly not in those numbers, so the pace certainly makes it more noticeable, yes.

I suspect the same would be true for co-ops in their current form, but it's difficult to track seeing as it's been created from various other co-operatives merging over time. I think, (pretty sure) they were the biggest grocery retailer at one point in their history, and still have more stores than any other. (I think they once had more stores than all the big retailers combined - and that wasn't very long ago).

Tesco are clever though - they saw that the main supermarket sector was getting crowded, and that the next chunk of growth was in the C-Sector, so got in there and flooded it.
Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury's are only now just realizing the same thing and desperately trying to play catch-up
