    Or lack of local alternatives.

We have Co-op, Budgen, Sainsburys and Tesco.

Tesco are probably the cheapest of the four. Certainly Tesco and Sainsburys are cheaper than the other two.

  • I would gladly go elsewhere, even drive the hour journey to get to our nearest Asda if they had a clubcard.

Sadly we dont have an Aldi a lot of the stuff in Lidil is cr*p and foreign and full of fat and stuff I cant read on the label as its not in English. We dont have an Aldi or Netto our local coop is expensive and only stocked with stuff I dont want at a corner conveinience shop and the next closest supermarket is Sainsburys which to be honest I would chose to stay at Tesco than shop there.

The majority of our area voted for an Asda when asked which they prefered on announcing a new superstore plot was approved. The local council approaved another Sainsburys (within walking distance of Tesco and Lidil) and an uproar continues!

    :D

They have you ensnared because they know people like you will keep going back to spend the points that YOU HAVE PAID FOR in the inflated prices that Tesco charge compared to the no-frills chains like Aldi and Lidl.

I like Aldi and Lidl but...

Their pseudo brands are usually available in Tesco under the value label at the same price.

I appreciate you feel let down, but have a sense of proportion. Not having a sense of proportion is probably one of the rudest thing you can do here by the standards of this board!

One can have the view that an emphasis on quality of products and service increases profits. The better you are, the more people will shop there, surely?

true, but this would increase your costs & lower your margins

All retailers work to a margin - a high-end shop will work to a higher margin to drive profitability, whereas a discounter will work to a much, much lower margin and go for bulk to drive profits.

It's much the same as how many manufacturers will be happy with, say, a 5% error rate on goods going out, as it would cost more to bring it down to 1% than it costs to replace faulty items going out.
(though that's no excuse for cold breakfast :) )

Didnt Netto get taken over by Asda?

Correct, although many got sold to other retailers as well (quite a large chunk in fact). I don't know if the conversions have finished yet, so there could still be Netto stores out there

Thats me. I can go to Tesco and do my weekly shop for £60 in an hour or I can go to Aldi and get 70% of what I want, then travel to Tesco and get the rest.

That would take me 2.5 hours and I'd only save about £5-10. Being as I earn £14 an hour and value my free time, going to Tesco is a no brainer.

I find the cheaper prices at Asda more than outweigh the lack of a "clubcard". A recent shop for store cupboard items was £11.28 at Asda. https://www.mysupermarket.co.uk priced it at £17.94 in Tesco.
