Breeders don't care about dogs, but only about 'winning'

I can't even begin to comprehend the politics of the dog showing world, it baffles me.
Poodles.
Do you mean outcrossing within the breed (dogs from different lines) or cross breeding? If it's cross breeding then short answer is no. I only agree with it in the likes of the dalmation that was brought in and I would agree with it in other breeds to improve length of muzzle etc. Other wise no way in hell do I agree with cross breeding!0 -
Personally I think all dogs should be vet checked before being allowed in the ring.. In a perfect world eh
Not that difficult to achieve..... I regularly show my two pedigree Bengal cats and at every GCCF cat show (from a small breed show, right up to the Supreme), every cat is vet checked at the entrance. If there is any doubt about health or welfare, they are excluded from the show and are not put forward to be judged.0 -
Just seen that my pug's brother came second in the pug class. And mine was meant to be the show dog of the litter (kept by the breeder) but he grew too much so he came to us to live in leisure.
Pleased that the pugs passed the vet checks. Anyone know where I can see the judging? The class isn't on the Crufts website or their Youtube channel

There are 26,000 dogs there this year over 4 days that's about 6,500 dogs to be checked by judges before judging starts at 9am. How realistic is that? Not that difficult to achieve..... Get a load of vets together (as they do at cat shows), make sure people arrive early (as they do at cat shows) so that all can be checked. There have been nearly 2,000 cats at previous Supreme cat shows, so 3 times that is not beyond the realms of human capability.
Personally, I am pleased that all cats are checked for fleas, ticks, infectious diseases etc before they have a chance to infect any other cats in the show hall, and having assisted vets on several occasions as vet steward, there are at least a handful of cats at each show that are excluded / isolated due to things such as these.0 -
I didn't watch the 2nd programme, I found the first one too upsetting. Having read through the thread, I find I can't argue as eloquently as most of you here. However, I can report on personal experience.
I love German Shepherds and have always had GSDs. With my last GSD, she developed Degenerative Myelopathy. This, along with her chronic and severe hip dysplasia eventually led to the devastating decision to have her PTS at 10 years old.
According to my vet, many GSDs can have similar problems - it's a genetic thing, partly as a result of trying to breed certain characteristics into show dogs (in the case of GSDs the downward slope to the rear end). I guess I must have been lucky up until my last GSD - none of my other dogs had similar problems, which is why I'd never heard of it (DM).
I still love GSDs but I couldn't put myself (or my dog) through what my pup went through, again. Which kind of explains why I found the first programme so upsetting.
I don't have any answers, just anger and frustration (and the urge to do physical harm to my pup's "breeder").And just where is the RSPCA in all of this anyway? How about arranging a petition.

I posted on here to say that personally I prefer to spend my hard earned money on my much loved pedigree pets. I have commited no crime - I merely have a different (but equally as valid) viewpoint to many on here - and yet I have been insulted and told I am "an open target", "despicable" and likened to a religious fanatic
:(. And all because I dared to say I love my animals - nothing more
.
I find it so sad that people have to resort to insults, spitefulness and bullying and appear incapable of polite discussion just because they cannot conceive of a different viewpoint.
By the way, to those posters who PM'd me with supportive posts - it's such a shame that so many of you feel unable to post on here for fear of these vicious, bullying fanatics - Thanks anyway
.
Frugalista, you're just being very silly and it doesn't help people to see your point of view. If you go back and re-read what you have posted perhaps you'll understand the responses more clearly. If you feel that I personally am unfairly accusing you of pride in the lineage of your dogs, then don't refer to your dog's ancestors as illustrious, because it's a reasonable connection to make in the light of that word.
Keep the bullying card for the playground, dear, and if you can't have a grown up discussion without taking it all personally then leave this thread for the adults to talk in, because we are talking welfare of dogs here and not about what you like to do or not.
Snowman - I get your point, the KC doesn't really care about the vet input, it seems. It is just focussed on keeping the competing breeders happy. If they wanted to, they could get themselves off the hook by ensuring that all breed standards were audited by the BVA - but they don't want that level of interference, I guess.
I'm very sorry to hear about your experience Booter.
Fridaycat - that's a really good idea, to actually stop them competing rather than just fail to award the top prize.
Lolseh - so you would be in agreement with cross breeding to overcome specific health problems that have developed through too close in breeding, breeding to a defective standard which has then become entrenched, and/or too small a genetic pool?0 -

I actually do agree with this, and other worlmanlike breeds whose breeding has lead to a very altered stance/ topline angle. Even as a supoorted of pedigree breeding i will make no excuse for this and believe it to be a considerable travesty and a strong argument, the strongest, for improving what i believe can be a good system.0 -
Talking to pedigree dog owners is like talking to creationists - you'll never get them to accept real science, there will be always be an excuse or weasel reason why they can carry on with their disgusting immoral practices.0

Owners certainly aren't all participating in this, most have never bred from a dog in their lives and plenty rescued their pedigree pets.0
