Breeders don't care about dogs, but only about 'winning'

Did you see tonight's program on pedigree dog breeding and the kennel club, a follow up to the 2008 program that lifted the lid on breeding and showing scandals?

  • Yes I did. I didn't see the first programme so was pretty disgusted at some of the attitudes of these so-called dog-lovers. Hopefully programmes like this will make the public more aware and put pressure on breeders to change their ways.

I thought the stories about the Pug, Bulldog, Cavalier, were particularly distressing - poor things.
  • In reply to the title of the thread, genuine caring breeders (who may also exhibit their dogs/work their dogs) DO care about the health & welfare of their breed as a whole. They DO spend a huge amount of money on health tests, hips, elbows, heart, eyes etc etc BEFORE even considering whether to have a litter from their !!!!!, or allowing their male to be used as a stud, and that is IF the health tests come back as below the breed average, or as a pass/clear.

Genuine caring breeders spend a HUGE amount of time showing their dogs, (not to mention the costs involved with this aswell!) so they can see a number of well bred dogs from all round the country, and then look at the compatibilty of lines, and also to enquire about health tests and to try to pick the best they can, as opposed to just using someones dog from round the corner. These breeders also spend alot of time researching lines, and are prepared to travel a long way to have a particular mating all with trying to ensure that the puppies produced will be healthy, and fit for function.

There will ALWAYS be breeders that breed for money, however the majority of breeders who exhibit their dogs ALWAYS have the welfare of the breed at heart
Just bumbling along, trying to save some money
Couldn't do it without coming here every day ;)

blimey it really was heartbreaking watching that program. It did come across at points that there were various breed clubs that were totally and utterly backward.

The king charles spaniel stats were shocking.

AS for the dogs being breed with their cousins or even closer relatives.. i mean common that is totally disgusting and not ethical.

We call ourselves a nation of dog lovers.... WHAT A JOKE !!!

EDIT: Oh and dont even get me started on what humans have done to such breeds such as the bulldog and the pug !!! How can those features be desirable to a point where a dog cant give birth or even breath properly !!!
The difference from the bulldog of old and todays mutant is just unbelievable

3 years since the original programme and not a lot has changed really. The breed clubs should be ashamed of themselves for not wanting to 'clean up' the problems in their breeds, many have their heads in the sand and continue to breed from dogs that have known genetic problems.
How these breeders can sell dogs on to people is beyond me. Even if you set aside the heartache they will be causing families and the Vet costs you still have dogs that are in pain and will suffer because of their disastrous breeding. Why breed dogs that are born to suffer?
Yes, there may be some breeders that care about their breed but they are far out stripped by the egotistical (and money grabbing) breeders that just want to continue their 'blood lines'.... no matter how many faults they contain.
The Kennel Club are little use, yes they've changed some Breed Standards, but is really changing the description of a pugs nose from 'short' to 'relatively short' really helping? Not in my opinion - they are sitting on the fence and taking breeders money and not doing a thing to help the welfare of dogs.
Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree! :D

I thought it was really sad and quite shocking too to see that Pugs & CKCS among others were just so totally unhealthy as breeds really.

What made me angry were the people and breeders at the Breed Clubs who were doing nothing about it despite having being told the facts and seeing for example Boxers dying at 3-4yrs old of Kidney disease yet the Stud which they think is responsible for the faulty gene had sired 100's of puppies therefore passing the faulty gene right across the breed. His owner wouldn't give a blood sample for them to check which I think is appalling.

Also the woman who was showing the champion CKCS who knew that it had that terrible neurological illness saying "no comment" yet he too had also sired several litters. That made me sooo mad and the poor lady who had seen the MRI's and been a whistleblower on the breed she clearly cared for was treated so terribly like an outcast.

Surely a true breeder who loves their breed should be more concerned with the long term health implications for the breed rather than the short term glory from a Champion - but unhealthy show dog?

If I had wanted a Cavalier pup it would really put me off, the chances of getting one without any health problems must be extremely low which is so sad.

It makes it all seem like a very twisted world the breeder who imported the Dalmation (from the US) who had been re-bred to introduce the healthy gene back into the breed should have been applauded for making them healthier not shunned.

Breeders breed because they like the money they earn from the sale of the pups, not because they like pups - or dogs.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)
