Can anyone advise me how easy they are to redeem? And my chances of getting my dates and flights? TIA

there are 4 economy redemption seats released on every flight at T-355 so currently you can book up till the end of July
4 redemptions will cost 200,000 avios and £1,499
you would be able to reduce the number of avios and increase the £s
so could have 4 economy flights would be 80,000 avios and £2,413
SFO is a difficult route to get in premium classes (nothing available in premium economy during July) but there seems to be availability in economy for a number of dates (August not released yet)

Club to San Fran is 150k avios per person (peak) rtn so 86k avios aren't going to do it. You can use them for discounted cash tickets though. At the moment 1 avios = 0.66p discount, however periodically you can get as much as 1p.
The alternative is take out a BA premium + Amex. You get a 2 4 1 voucher at 10k spend. .Inc sign up bonus the avios to reach that r about 40+kf

Great, thanks Caz and Budget. Were doing a road trip around CA so I also have the option to fly in to LA or Vegas though San Fran was the preferred. 80,000 and £1400 isn't too bad a deal I guess, considering it would save us about £2600.

I would avoid a Vegas flight. Awful stories of the planes being full of drunken men going on stag weekends.

Don't forget San Diego[STRIKE] and also Oakland in the SF bay area[/STRIKE].
  • San Jose as a new BA route may have more availability.

not sure if you misread or mistyped :-)
You would need 200,000 Avios to pay the lower amount, you pay the extra £1k to use 120,000 less avios

I am just needing a bit of clarification please :)

I have been collecting va flying miles now for a few years, I am just looking at possibly converting to avios. (me I know I can't convert the points)

I have just used up the gold amex allowance for this 6 months for me and my dh, so I am now out of va collecting options till march next year.

I might give avios a go, but can I just ask about the companion voucher? how does this work? once triggered you get 2 flights for the price of one in miles, but have to pay taxes etc on both? how many companion vouchers can you earn per year?

I have been using my va miles to fly to america (family of 4) so I use my upgrade voucher to upgrade 2 flights and then use miles to upgrade the other 2.

we only fly once a year.
  • Hello,

You can only claim one voucher per 12 months and then have 2 years to book the flights. You pay full taxes for both flights, plus full avios for the other flight. This is based on the premium card, the standard one in my view is not worth having if you're planning on using the upgrade voucher.

    Enjoy :)
