    Good afternoon all

My wife and I are going to Vegas and San Diego in September and are on WT+ with BA. We are looking at using our Avios points (currently 34k worth) to upgrade the return from San Diego to Club World. Do you know if there is a set time before the flight that the upgrades are made available or is it purely down to availability? I suspect the latter but if it was a set time (say 1 month before flight) I can start watching my emails are a bit closer : )

    Thanks in advance

The seats that are used for upgrades are the same as those used for full redemptions. There are 2 x CW seats released for redemption on every flight at T-355 and are often snapped up not long after release (people do sit up until Midnight (1am BST) to grab them
You can check for availability on the BA website as if you were looking for a full redemption, if they show available then they are available for upgrade and you get on the phone quick
There have been reports of availability coming up a couple of days before the flight so worth checking regularly
the cost may be more than you think...upgrade from WT+ to CW from SAN to LHR is 30,000 avios per person if your flight is "off-peak" and 25,000 per person if "peak"...you may need to factor in the costs of finding another 16,000 or 26,000 avios

Not unless you have Gold status IIRC.

But creating a BAEC family account may be an option.

What are you trying to achieve?

My plan was to save to upgrade my daughters flights when she goes on honeymoon . I have a household BA account with my husband my daughter has accounts with both BA and avios and the same for her fianc! .we were all going to save and then pool our points when they book.(they all live with me)
It sounds like this won't be possible:(

are here honeymoon flights already booked? is the class booked in able to be upgraded with Avios? (not all economy tickets can be upgraded) is there availability for upgrade? (needs to be the same as a full redemption and can be checked on the BA website)
Some routes are harder than others to find availability to upgrade on...eg if they were in WT+ to LAX there are very limited dates with CW availability all in the first 2 weeks in November!

I think WT+ passengers stand a good chance of being upgraded anyway if economy is oversold.

We flew back from Montreal on Sat 18/6 and about a dozen people were upgraded - possibly the entire WT+ cabin.

It was my first time flying CW, and although the free upgrade was much appreciate it is a very poor product compared to business class on AA (which I happily pay for when a sale is on).

Can I have some advice on using Avios Points? I have Tesco Clubcard points which I can convert to approx 86500 Avios points. I would like to use them for flights to San Francisco next year for a family holiday (during school hols). I cant seem to get accurate details about availability just yet and also without the points in the Avios account. However, I dont want to convert them if they are a waste of time. Can anyone advise me how easy they are to redeem? And my chances of getting my dates and flights? TIA

Unfortunately you'd still have to pay the taxes, fees and charges on routes to the US, so for booking in economy isn't really a good use of Avios.
Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.

Thanks RichardW that's the advice I'm looking for. I think the taxes etc may be around £450 each but I'm sure the usual flight price is about £1000 so we could travel for half price. The alternative is to use points for 2 people premium flights and pay for an additional 2 premium flights. I'm reluctant to convert to Avios if it's difficult to use them
