If I ever get one of these I'm going to answer that in the corner it says "Pilkington". My partner has, in the past when attempting to help a customer, had them report that in the bottom left corner it says "Iiyama" (a monitor manufacturer)

Closest I ever had was one of those automated "you have won a £1000 prize" calls, that went on for a couple of minutes then said "press 1 to repeat this information". I got my partner to keep pressing 1, and we timed how long the message was.

I happened to run Linux at the time, and still had a modem in the system, so knocked up a quick script to dial 1 every 120-odd seconds and do not check for dialtone.

I then left the phone off the hook so we could hear how long they stayed on the line for

1 hour, 20-odd minutes. I really hope it was an international call.

They are getting wise to wind-ups.
    Yesterdays' conversation went
<skip intro, in which he tells me name and my address which I don't confirm - not hard as it's in the phone book>
Him - You are using a windows computer?
    Me - Yes
Him - Which version of windows?
Me - You tell me, you know everything about my PC
    Him -not committing
    <repeat a few times>
Me - these days it's a one in three chance of XP, Seven or Eight. You have to choose.
    Him - <long pause> Windows XP
Me - Lucky guess, do you want to try for laptop or desktop? It's a 50/50 chance.
    <repeat a few times>
    Him - Laptop
Me - Sorry that's wrong, want to try something else?
    Bzzz ....

  • New one for me , had one just before 20:00 , so I thought ok lets play again..., so she says the usual and I say oh dear ok what should I do , I wound up a bit saying PC is not switched on and I need to power it up , later ok she says goto Start button , Oh I says where is that then ? bottom left of screen it says start. So I says if I get to the bottom left of the screen it show me a little thing with squares on it, she says ah ok then press the key with the windows logo on it , so I say which square is that on the screen, she says no the key on the left hand side of the keyboard. So I say I don't use a keyboard its a screen with squares on it which I tap when I want to use my apps, this wonderful Windows 8 is great and much better than my Nokia Phone , and I can watch videos on it too, I am watching one at the moment from youtube about people winding up scammers saying Windows have told me you have a problem with your computer.
Muttering under breath heard before phone goes dead....
    Isn't Windows 8 great

Had 4 calls yesterday, first, indian scammer, as soon as he said the company he works for, i replied oh yes, I've heard of you, tried to write it down but the call was low volume, and i couldnt understand him, but it said it 3 times.
    Tech something.
Anyway i told him they where a bunch of scammers and i belong to a forum where everyone knows the company, before he put the phone down, then i had 3 phones calls that night, everytime i answered no one spoke, then disconnected, and again today.
So today afterwards i phoned 150 on my phone, and got through to some indian in the call centre and ask for my number to be changed, he said about the phone preference service, i replied done that 3 years ago and i still get the calls, i've been told that only works if its a UK phone number, so i asked for my number to be changed, he didnt want to do it, but i said I got 2 options, 1 change my number or 2 change my supplier.
so tomorrow i'm getting a new number, wonder how long before the calls start again.
Quote, the phone numbers are sold to other companies direct from virginmedia randomly. supposed to be numbers which are no longer in use, to which i replied, ok, but how does the person phoning me know my name, my house number and street address and post code, and 2nd the phoneline isn't mine but my mothers. so its her name if they used a book.
so new number and ex-directory so it wont be via a phone book
my feelings, someone at virginmedia call centre is copying people data who own computers, aka broadband as part of their package and selling it to these scammers.
I wont be uploading the new phone number onto my CV when i change it on the jobcentres website i'll be putting my mobile only.
We'll see how long before they start again.

I have a little thing called a de-Barker, it is for shutting up loud dogs, I keep it by the phone and when they ring I lay the phone on the de-barker and press the button and if that doesn't burst their ear drums nothing will.

How many times do I have to say this
    • The 'phone system is designed not to transmit acoustic shock
    • It will not transmit ultrasound - it's optimised for human speech
    • All that will happen at the other end is that they will hear a loud annoying noise - it definitely won't deafen or burst eardrums.
    • You will do more damage to yourself than the person at the other end.

When they call me i pretend the person they want is outside and then call there name.I tell them the person will be 2 minutes and ask them to wait.I just leave them waiting no idea how long they wait but it gives me a little laugh that they waste time.

I have a landline and mobile with Virgin and I have not yet had a call from these Indian computer scammers. Not that actually want one of course. Perhaps it is to do with being ex directory (in the case of the landline)
