People love to throw around rules and there are usually exceptions, so here's one, foolproof rule, with NO exceptions. JUST INDICATE EVERY TIME YOU'RE MEANT TO! Too easy?!

Easy: yes. Valid: yes. Correct: Not necessarily.

As I said in my last post, the purpose of teaching people to only indicate if there is someone to benefit is to encourage observation and awareness of surroundings which contributes to overall road safety and saves lives.

How many times have you been near to another car only for them to shove their indicator on and immediately pull out without looking. When they eventually cause an accident they'll claim it wasn't their fault "because I indicated" which is the driving equivalent of a grown adult saying "look I managed to go to the toilet all by myself, it's not my fault the lid was down".

Just following a guideline, because it's a guideline, while applying no actual thought is what leads to this sort of behaviour.
  • I bet you tell mother in law jokes at parties as well OP.

And the reason the BMW didn't indicate is obviously the fact that you were driving in the outside BMW lane don't you know.....
  • I find this too, it's not just one BMW - it seems the majority just don't bother.

Ahh car stereotypes, they never get old...

LeeUK do tell us what you drive and we'll see if anyone has any amusing anecdotes? I'm going to hazard a guess at something vastly inferior to a BMW :)

Lum, yep, I understand why people are taught to only indicate if someone is there 'don't indicate to the birds' - and and I see plenty of 'signal manoeuvre' that you describe rather than 'MIRROR signal manoeuvre'. However, in your example, that indicator gives me warning that I'm about to get hit, so I can take action, better that than making the move without the indicator. You have to learn to watch the 'body language' of cars on the road too to avoid this.
Basically I think that 2 sets of advice for 2 different drivers in different circumstances have become mixed up.
Everyone, all the time, just indicate like you're meant to.
Advanced/police drivers, doing a test or practising, only indicate if there is someone around.
  • Do BMW cars come with working indicators as standard?

Just that I was following one for a good 2 miles today and it never used them once at 3 roundabouts and countless junctions.

    What an !!!!.

I was told you only need to indicate to show other road users what you are doing. So if you are joining a motorway from a sliproad, its 100% clear that you are going to join the motorway, no need to indicate.

Same if its left turn only, or at a roundabout with lanes (left for left, middle for straight over and right for right), no need to.

Oh, and I own a BMW and indicate when I need to ;).
What is pi? Where did it come from?

Unless the M'way is unlit and it's dark..... At all other times it's pointless.

On the subject of indicators, I came across a tard who used the LH lane to go right at a large roundabout and then at every LH turn on the way round, he/she briefly indicated right........ Im pretty sure I don't remember that from my driving test.

It's still worth indicating in left turn only lanes sometimes, for example if there are pedestrians or cyclists about. They may not have seen the road markings, or may not know what they mean, so the cyclist may decide to undertake you and then go straight on, or the pedestrian may cross the street you're turning left into as they think you're going straight on.
