Our old tv was 5 years old and we have wanted a new one for years
That just goes to show how wasteful some people are these days. There used to be a time when people bought a new TV when the old one was broken, not buy one then buy a new one a couple of years later just cos you wanted a new one. I hope all these old working TVs are finding new homes and not just being thrown away. Not only incredibly wasteful but also (though I'm not a greenie) causing environmental damage.

Who the hell do you think you are - the tv police?! A bargain's a bargain and does not require you to judge people.

This is a money saving forum. Whats moneysaving about buying a new TV when you've got a working one? Whats moneysaving about not waiting till they ALL come down in price because you don't actually need one as yet? And whats more money saving than giving your working TV to someone who might need one?
And all at the same time you are preventing any more environmental damage than necessary.
  • Oh I see, because someone spent their own money that devalues them as a person. That's why you can attack them.

I agree with your sentiment but not your manner.

I'm not attacking anyone, just making a general point. If the person I quoted feels that way then I sincerely apologise but I make no apologies for making the point.

The other side of the coin is technology is moving forward so quickly with these sorts of things that spending big bucks on big names gets the good stuff now but what about in a couple of months when something new is out or the specs gets alot better and you've spent big time on somethings thats now well out of date!
Spending less doesnt always get you bad quality and you could even spend less by getting a big named item reconditioned.
Like alot of people i cant afford Sony so i look for the cheaper items with good reviews, good specs at a price i can afford.
Being patient has its rewards too.
Then again, are you absolutely sure you NEED that HD TV right now?
If as you say technology moves on so quickly and you have a TV that works now, then why not wait until HD TV is a fact and everyone will need a digital HD ready TV, the demand will then go up, prices drop and at the same time technology has moved on as well, so you'll get the best of both worlds!

People just need to stop wanting the latest gadget right here and now...
    Think of the mantra's...
Do I really need it? and add to that RIGHT NOW!?

Does anyone know where you can still buy a 'proper telly ' from  . My out-laws want one but they're like rocking horse poo to find. Sony, phillips, panasonic would be fine.

Please tell me if you think im wrong but if you have a PC with a decent graphics card that has DVI output then you can buy a DVI to HDMI cable and connect to your HD ready LCD TV.
You'll then need to transfer your your HD films to your hard drive (might take a while as they are over 20GB) but then with some HD DVD software you should be able to play through your TV.
Long way round maybe but might save some money

It's never that simple unfortunately. Yes you can simply buy a Dvi to HDMI cable and that should work but there are problems. For one the native resolution of many screens causes a fair bit of problems for PCs and there a whole load of issues with overscanning the picture, suffice to say the end result isn't always perfect.
I was always told that if you plan on using a HTPC as your main source you should buy the TV that's best with dealing with that, apparently this means getting one that can do 1:1 pixel mapping, it's all so bloody complicated and I'm always hearing people complaining about this issue.

Then when your talking about HD-DVD you then have to make sure your graphics card has HDCP (high definition copy protection) not sure what's happening at the moment, or if you'll need it with ripped content, but eventually they're gonna turn that on and stop you from watching HD-DVDs & Blu-Ray discs in HD if your hardware doesn't support this.

Whilst I entirely agree that LCD/Plasma/Flat Screen/HD is certainly the future, and just about any cheap version from any manufacturer will deliver a good picture from a DVD source, cheap LCD sets can deliver almost unwatchable TV, either from Freeview or Analogue. All demos in showrooms use a DVD source for a reason.

Also, whilst it is interesting to note the actual rock bottom price of any product, surely some small account should be taken into the consideration of "cost of life" ownership. I'd rather pay 10% more on a cheap TV from, e.g. Tesco's, in the knowledge that I can easily take it back, and just get another. And because whilst most UK retailers seem to ignore the facts, under EU law I am entitled to (at least) a 2 year guarantee - a fact which even Tesco understand.
  • V7 LTV32DA - 32" Widescreen LCD TV HD Ready.

Spotted this after my neighbour bought one. Turned up within two days of ordering. They are very pleased with it. Can't find any more tech info on it and just who are V7?
