  • ..... An 'old style' (or current unless you've got Sky HD) TV picture has 576 lines, the lower .....

I think if you check that the current TV pictures at broadcast at 625 lines and not 576.

On a recent visit to ASDA, I was looking at LCD HDTVs on display. There were various big names like Sony and Samsung and a lot of the cheaper known brands. When I stood back and looked at the picture quality of the screens (which were showing the exact same channel), the best picture quality was on a Bush 32".

I have alway been a Sony person, I would always try and buy Sony (if I could afford it) but from what I seen in ASDA I think I will wait quite a long time before I make the decision to buy a LCD HDTV. I would imagine that LCD HDTVs will come down quite considerably in price when HDTV eventually get let loose on the masses. Until then I will keep my money in my pocket. ;)
  • can anyone tell me the cheapest equivelant 37" lcd TV which is in silver colour
  • I can vouch for this little stunner from the high quailty Finnish (nokia!) make...and seems to fill a gap on Martins 1st page.

    32" Hd, Freeview
    http://www.empiredirect.co.uk/content/products/details/index~modelcode~FIN-32745-HD.htm

    £449.99 + £15 P&P = 464.99
    - Quidco cashback 2-3%?

The specs are incomplete on the page,,,, off the top of my head,,,its Picture in Picture, Picture and Picture (side by side),,, Decent dolby sound,, Virtual or Surround. 1000 page teletext (analog)

I'll dig out the instruction manual and put the exact specs....or if you cant wait... maybe call empire direct

  • Hi,

I am a bit of a newbie here. Whats the quality like for Sky or freeview for normal TV? Is the upscaling horrendous?

    Cheers

Clearly there are a lot of people on here who don't know the first thing about LCD TVs. As previous post, mine was one of the Cheap Aldi's (now expensive by todays standard). I'v put it next to our crt TV & it out performs the crt in every way. There is no motion blur. So todays newer models will only be better if possible.
I don't think motion blur is any longer the major issue.

The problem with bigger LCDs is that their native resolution is generally twice or more the resolution of standard broadcast TV.
This means that they need software interpolation to make the SD picture scale up to the panel's native resolution.

Some LCDs have much better software and electronics than others, and therefore better SD pictures, but *none* will ever look quite as 'right' as the best CRTs showing a good analogue SD picture.

With an HD source they can look absolutely stunning, but I've never seen an LCD that can match a quality CRT for sharpness and clarity with SD.

The real issue is that there is a fundamental mismatch between LCD technology and (currently)standard broadcast TV standards.
  • I've not owned a flat-screen before. can this one be wall-mounted does anyone know?
