  • IS it just me or is the picture quality on the LCD & Plasma screen much worse than the old big TV's?

Watching football and other fast moving images in particular it seems the LCD's sturggle - a football apprears more like a fuzz rather than a well defined spherical object.

The only advantage of the LCD & Plasma screens is that they save space. But in terms of actual picture quality I've yet to be convinced.
Cheap LCDs are nowhere as good as CRTs when it comes to viewing standard definition (SD) TV.

The main reason that brands like Sony,Toshiba and Panasonic are more expensive is down to the sophisticated electronics they employ to make SD pictures 'fit' onto an HD display.

HD LCD TVs are glorified LCD computer monitors - they only display a really clear picture in their native resolution, which is why standard definition broadcasts never look quite right.

Having said that, they are generally brighter and more colourful than CRT, but when it comes to displaying SD TV, they lack sharpness and are prone to pixellation.

Unless you are going to be watching a lot of HD content and/or are very pushed for space, switching to HD TV is a bit pointless at the moment,IMO.
  • !!!!!!?

Why would anyone spend over 300 quid for a TV? Especially one which will be half that price in a year's time?
  • Still people go on about how LCDs surely have fuzzy felt pitches with balls having a white trail, well I have news for you guys- over the past year LCD timings have become fast enough not to have to worry about either of those problems. By constantly quoting this (now) mis-fact it just shows how behind you are with your opinions.

Now thats not to say that LCDs are perfect, certainly not, however it makes me cringe when I see posters reproducing yesteryears hearsay when in reality todays LCDs have far different challenges in obtaining a clear picture (mainly in the areas of contrast ratio and resolution/artifacting).

Can you honestly say though that the quality is better? I'm really interested to hear people's points of view because there is very much a turning tide as people get sick of seeing a trail left as a football shoots across the screen, I could go on but I'm biased..... I LOVE CRT!
I'm with you there. The ONLY reason to rush out and get an LCD or plasma screen is if you need the HD capabilities, I would certainly recommend against buying a cheap no name LCD or plasma. We will be hanging on to our JVC CRT till plasma or LCD have picture quality at least close to CRT.

Maybe by then SED TVs will be available and affordable: http://www.hdtvsolutions.com/sed_tvs.htm
  • I just bought the 37" from woollies for my sister -

I had 3 choices direct tv (£497), ebuyer (£527) and woolworths (£499) - woolorths had 5% quidco, direct tv had rubbish customer reviews on pricerunner and ebuyer was more expensive and the model number was slightly different (by one digit) and they quoted contrast ratio 600:1 (direct tv quoted 800:1 for their one with the same model number as woolworths who did not give a contrast ratio for theirs)

But having read this thread it seems the wall mount is not included in the woolworths one :( - does anyone know for sure.

The other 2 say it's included in the box - surely they don't take it out at woolworths do they?

  • While Samsung and Sony may be the LCD panel leaders...there are very few manufacturers of these panels, so what you'll find is that some of these 'bargain brands, actually use the same panels! Now I think (don't quote me) that the Samsung panel is used in the Techwood.

That's what i read, i think Samsung, Sony and LG are the only manufactures that make panels, so any of these TV's mentioned will have one of those panels, maybe older type panels perhaphs?

I bought a Hyundai 32" last year for a snip under £600 - that was cheap compared to the big boys around at the time and i find the TV outstanding!

Going to have to buy an Xbox 360 now to take advantage of the HD and you can get a HD-DVD add on for the Xbox for around £100 iirc!

didn't the electricity board predict that if we all got high definition tvs the wouldn't be enough electricity for them? Given the global warming crisis, do we really need these tvs? there's nothing to watch anyway! and anyway it would be better to wait for the tv designers to design energy efficient ones, as they will have to in the next few years...

On Saturday I managed to buy an Acoustic Solutions 32" HD LCD with built in Freeview for £399.99 from Argos. They are in the Clearance Bargains, and when I looked were not available to buy online for home delivery. I had to hunt online round the local shops to find one that had some. I ended up driving about 50 miles but I am very pleased with ti so far. Haven't seen a 32" HD with Freeview anywhere else that cheap.... but no doubt somebody will tell me!

Could you please give me the item number.
  • Good prices posted here, but not 'top brands'. Managed to get a 27" LCD HD with in built freeview from Empire Direct for £399 - normally over £600. Now that was the best deal I could find for a branded set.
