ugh seriously would people put those things in a communal bin to lie and fester for god knows how long surely they should be disposed of either down the loo or straight into an outside bin

Probably because it would get collected once a week and not everyone has an outside bin let alone wants to go out there every 5 minutes?? I mean a bin is for rubbish, not for people to look through and touch!

The only thing that doesnt go in the bathroom bin in our house is shampoo or cosmetic type bottles for the recycling. Everything else goes in there and gets put in the normal rubbish. (I cant believe anyone would flush a sanitary towel down the loo? Im sure it says on the packaging not to.)

Life is too short to be digging through waste of god knows what, just incase someone had happened to put something in there that possibly could be recycled.

It doesn't matter if he thinks its ok or not - if you have asked him to stop he should respect that and stop.

I half agree with you, because I don't see why their request should take precedence over his concern for the environment and thus desire to do the right thing?

We also recycle before placing items in the bin, so I generally don't go routing through the bathroom bin, but I also don't see it as an issue. I would let your OH get on with it if he wants to do that.

I accept it's a little embarrassing for your daughter thinking her dad might come across her used towels, but if he hasn't got an issue with it, I'd respectfully ask her to grow up and consider the wider perspective. Another way of putting this is to tell her it is not a big deal, he's seen far worse. Alternatively, perhaps she can dispose of them elsewhere.

ETA: I've just thought of something else. A few people have mentioned wrapping sanitary items in nappy bags. How environmentally friendly are they? I don't have any in the house, but am assuming they are as bad for the environment as plastic shopping carrier bags and thus takes hundreds of years to decompose. If a significant portion of menstruating women are using say 20-30 of these each a month, that is a big issue for the environment. Same for dog poop; are those bags environmentally friendly? (It makes me mad to think of what people are able to buy along these lines.)

I absolutely, completely, and utterly (see how strongly :D) disagree with you.

I've got no idea how old Aliasjo's daughter is but I think it is completely unreasonable to expect any young woman, or worse teenager, to have to exit a bathroom carrying a used sanitary towel, pass through communal areas, and dispose of it in an outside bin. I personally would not do that, and I am an adult woman living in my own house where only my husband and children might see me. I think it is entirely reasonable to dispose of such things in a lidded bathroom bin, and that it is disrespectful of the girl's father not to allow her the privacy to do so. I would be horrified if anyone raked through my bathroom rubbish, which is placed in a bin with a lid and liner, and the liner is removed with the rubbish, tied off and placed in the outer bin twice a week, so once anything goes in the bin it isn't open to public scrutiny.
  • i am somewhat surprised in this day and age nothing has been sorted for menstral waste. As flinging them in the rubbish somewhat makes me gag a little ! I used to take mine to work in a bag and put them in the bins supplied. When I lived at home as a child we had an old parkray fire and my mother would burn the towels on the fire. My mother said as a child they never had that problem as they used to use rags - hence the saying boil your rag. As these were boiled and reused - my mother was one of 5 children of menstral age - god knows what happened if you were all on at once.

She's 12 and at that age. You know the one...where even mention of the word 'bra' evokes severe embarrassment. :rotfl:

Even if she wrapped the towel up like a Xmas present there is still no way she would ever leave the bathroom with it. Imagine if her brother met her on the landing. She'd die. :D No doubt she will grow up and out of it, but she'll do that in her own good time.

Anyway, regardles of that, I think it's a bit silly to suggest people should not use the bin for the very use it was intended for, simply because one party is extreme in his recycling habits. Sorry lunar, no offence meant. :D

Few are more fervent recyclers than me but I have to say I agree wholeheartedly with this comment.

The potential for damage to his daughter's soul by his insensitivity cannot be excused by his desire to do right by the planet.

I'd think it an entirely reasonable response if, in years to come, she feels that he cannot be trusted with her self - her privacy, modesty, hopes, fears, secrets, mistakes ...

    Hope it all works out.

if you think a moment - perhaps one bin for 'sanitary waste' which is out of bounds to males, and another for ordinary bathroom waste would solve the problem?
